sheffield hallam social life

i just got rejected from uni of sheffield for psychology so it's looking like it's hallam for me... only issue is that i've heard hallam isn't that great in terms of social life - that a lot of students are mature (im 19). also ltrly every applicant ive spoken to is doing a more practical subject like nursing or education which obv i expect since it's an ex-poly, but i worry that i'm going to be in a small minority doing one of the more 'academic' subjects like psychology. i can't find anyone to speak to from hallam who does psychology as it seems there are very few who do which worries me... can anyone tell me what social life is like there? what psychology is like there? are there actually many people who enrol for psych?

thanks, any response is much appreciated.

Well unless you absolutely must study in Sheffield, your original post implies to me that being at a less practical university would more appeal to you. There is clearing too.

Hi there,

I don't study psychology myself, but I have a couple of friends who do and really enjoy it! There are lots of people who do and it is a popular course. If you want to speak to someone who studies psychology, you can do here: https://www.shu.ac.uk/study-here/student-chat
If you enter the course you are thinking of doing, somebody will answer your questions and chat to you about what the course is like and can give you more specific details about what the modules and assessments etc are like for them. Somebody should reply within a few days 🙂

As for the social life here, I love it! Everyone I have met is friendly and most people are up for meeting up and doing things together. It's great for a night out if you like going out and there are lots of bars, pubs and clubs and they are mostly all very close together which is great for a night out. There are also lots of sociable halls where people go because they want to socialise which is fun too.

Hallam also offers lots of societies for a wide range of different things so there is usually something for everyone and these are very fun too. Depending on how much time you have to commit, some societies meet once a week, some sports societies tend to train a few times a week but all of them are fun. There is also a sports social night out on a Wednesday called Hallam Nation where people dress up with different themes and everyone loves it.

In terms of social activities which do not involve going out/ drinking, the student union puts on events to different places - e.g. they are going to watch a Sheffield Steelers ice hockey match soon and these events are really fun too and a good way to meet new people and also try a new activity which you otherwise might not do.

I also wouldn't say that there are mostly mature students here- of course some people are mature students but on my course everybody is around my age (21) and I am in second year. I actually had 2 years out before I came to uni but this didn't make a difference as everybody was around my age. Again, if you use the 'chat to students' system, you can speak to people who do psychology and get their experience if there were lots of mature students but from my experience there weren't!

I hope some of this helps!

Hii. Umm so I'm assuming you are applying this year. I've also applied to sheffield hallam for criminal psychology but it depends if I get the right grades * but yk i have a little hope I might get it. I visited the uni today for an open day and the social life seems great tbh. Sheffield is a really nice city.

At Sheffield Hallam

... the SU closes at 6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and is shut all weekend.

... there is no student bar anymore

... the engagement rate for students for societies etc according to the SUs own impact report is around 1 in 10 students ... around 9 in 10 Hallam students do not bother with the SU https://www.hallamstudentsunion.com/union/publications/ "Impact report"
If you’re still considering going to Hallam
there is a groupchat on sn4p and whatsapp. There are people who are studying psychology and are young.
