Council houses are a cheaper solution than putting individuals awaiting asylum decisions in hotels and running up massive bills than people like myself have to pay for.
Even better, we fund the home office adequately so it can employ enough processors so we don’t have an asylum backlog that sees many people waiting more than a year for a decision.
The problem is dim witted people aren’t interested in pragmatic solutions. Instead they fall for empty slogans like “take back control” or “stop the boats” so we end up with awful politicians who are more concerned with optics than effective policy.

I suspect you're firmly in the minority there, it's a very cold way to look at people.

I actually suspect among the general population, I'm in the silent majority. I suspect in this student website though to be in the minority.

It is not illegal to claim asylum.
Are you seriously proposing that the UK should defy the long established law of the sea as well as its obligations under international conventions which the UK freely entered into? Are you willing to see migrants die at sea after being turned away?
Most of those who arrive are later found by due process to be genuine refugees.
The current situation has been engineered by the Government. which has run down the processing system, and which chose to leave the EU mechanisms for sharing responsibility for asylum claims (even after Brexit, the UK could have stayed in this system).
Please look at some facts about asylum and don't be misled by tabloid reporting and bad faith politicians such as Sunak and Braverman.

Entering the UK through an illegal channel makes them criminals even if their claim is valid. All claims should be processed before then even set foot on our shores.
