uni of sussex

hey! i’m going to sussex in september n i’m so scared about moving and being able to afford life there. i live in yorkshire rn n from visiting sussex a few times there is a large difference in the price of stuff and accommodation (with it being 8.1k a year in sussex in comparison to 4/5k accom at home). i know there is cheaper accom options off campus n townhouses but i cannot bring myself to share with 11 people and i need to stay on campus as i want to get to know brighton without stressing about travelling to uni everyday if ygm. i understand as brighton is a lovely place n has access to london but it’s so extortionate!

anyway i just wanted to ask is it easy to find jobs in the brighton area and how much money should i save in preparation for moving (i have around 1.6k right now but i know many people go to uni without saving money but i have to or ill stress way too much😞)

but anyway, i’m so excited :3 concerts n everything as nobody decent comes near me n it’s always london. 😡 OH AND ALSO where should i visit when i move bc ive only ever been brighton n eastbourne area n places in between those two, any nice places to go? pls reply i am stressing myself.

Hey I'm also from Yorkshire! 🙂 I've visited nearly every other week for the past 5/6 months, and from what I've seen with people I've met there's no issues getting jobs, very similar to up north, although you should apply early considering competition for applicant part time jobs will be high, depending on what area of work you're wanting to go into. Many places still require previous experience which is always annoying to deal with. There's jobs on the campus itself like working at the co-op, but again there'll be a lot of competition.
I've got a similar amount saved up and I would say it's fine so long as you're looking for a job - although my sister was lucky she didn't need to work much with her maintenance loan.
I know a few good restaurants like Bill's, Wahaca and Murasaki and cheap clubs but there's also a good few fun activities like escape rooms or even just nice walks along the coast 🙂if you'd like to talk more I'd love to!

Hey,
I’m going in September also and have had this exact worry! It seems so expensive and I’ve ultimately had to take a gap year to try and save money this year😭.
I’m hoping to transfer to a store in Brighton at my current part time job, but I am nervous there won’t be any space.
What course are you studying?

have a visit in lewes they've got a depot cinema/theatre there and im pretty sure they do cheap student tickets on like tuesday or something, someone else mentioned bill's it's a really nice place too, if you're wondering what other general places to go to around brighton worthing is a nice little place, but more than anything brighton overall has really good walking spots if you're into that, same with sussex uni you'll have the boundary walk and stuff, cows on the hill by northfield accom and stuff. what accom are you gonna be staying in? i stayed in northfield this year and it was quite a good experience compared to lots of what i've heard about other accom (esp lewes court lol ew). i didn't really save for uni before i went bc i didn't manage to get a summer job, so what i did instead was the second i got the email that i got into sussex, i started applying for jobs in brighton the second i got home, did interviews over summer and bc its brighton they get lots of students so theyre very understanding and flexible, i secured my job mid august but only actually started working end of september after freshers week. i work at a sainsburys, they'll prob be looking to hire bc lots of our hires are students so once people graduate and stuff they'll be wanting to have new hires for the next academic year. it's not a bad environment tbh im finding it quite chill. there's also asdas, aldi, shops like primark or even just like hotels that you could apply to, i'd suggest those. but overall, remember that first year doesn't count towards your final grade, so still put the effort in to get used to the type of work load you'll be getting, but don't stress too much about 1sts and 2:1s and all that! just learn the skills you need for 2nd yr cuz thats when it really starts to matter, and have fun and make friends that you might want to move in with in 2nd yr. overall goodluck with the job search and uni when u start!

hey! im learning the hard way rn that transfers can be annoying where managers might take ages to reply to your email or might not reply at all unless u bombard them with emails lol, i'd say the second you get confirmation that you will be attending sussex, reach out to the brighton branches of your store about your transfer for uni as jobs will b filling up quick after freshers as that seems to be when people tend to start applying most (when they realise they need money to fund their boozey nights out lol), and don't be shy about sending more than one email to the same managers as sometimes they might not get the noti or your email might blend in with others etc. if u havent already make sure you try to apply for the maximum maintenance loan, u might not get the full max but if your parents provide their annual income etc, you'll get more than the minimum maintenance loan !!
