I remember they're being there a huge thread about Uni's which have blocked steam and haven't on the SteamPowered User forums. I'll find the link and check, 1 sec. might have been only US.

EDIT: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=723595&highlight=University

Working:
University of Cambridge: Corpus Christi College – Cambridge, UK (Campus-wide: Only CS:s-smilie: works? See post #37)

Post 37:
Cambridge University - Corpus Christi College (works)

Just tried a sort game of Counter Strike Source. Works perfectly. However, this is only for Corpus Christi College. Different colleges have different internet rules, and so may not work in other colleges.

P.S. Because of some stupid license restriction, the only game I have left that works in UK in CSS... I miss my TF2.

(I think the TF2 problem is not to do with the Uni blocking it. I think he means that he bought the game in Russia (example of one of the countries where this applies) and he can only play it if hes in that country. I've heard of people having that problem)

Also, steam works at Imperial. Does not work at Durham(firewall blocks it). Nothing about Bristol or Bath yet. (Unis from Ops sig)

Quite interesting thread that. :P

Hope this helps.
Generally speaking computer stuff is blocked by individual colleges, not the uni, so it would depend how strict whichever college it was was feeling....

Ah I see. Thanks for the help

So asking current students in the college threads would be sensible...

The other thing is that whilst some colleges might not specifically block any particular applications, they may have restrictions on bandwidth usage. That probably depends what you are doing with Steam I suppose.

eek, dno how i'm gonna cope at uni then. I've had 3 emails from my ISP about fair usage now saying i've downloaded over 40GB over the last 30 days

Just hope you don't end up at one of the colleges which charge for internet usage per GB  .

To be fair, I don't think there's that much time during term to play time-consuming online games, and I'm not sure what those 40GB you downloaded were, but personally I'm very very careful about what I download through the college network. It's not that I've heard of people getting into trouble, but I don't want to take any chances...

:ditto:
As said before..research the colleges and choose based on their internet restrictions.
Peterhouse are apparently quite lenient (we have rules but ignore them if broken, I think... don't quote me on it though)

Indeed, better to download the games and porn at home, then bring them in. Also, I would bring in an Xbox 360 and a 26 inch LCD HDTV TV (which can be used as a PC monitor also). Thus, the ultimate gaming/academic dwelling is created.

There is plenty enough time to play if you want to.

A 26" monitor that doubles as a TV would piss me off royally. Even if it was 1080p. At less than 1080p, the resolution for a monitor would suck balls. My 21" wide screen monitor is just about manageable. If I wanted more screen space, I'd get dual screens.

Nah, mate I like my 26 inch - won't use it for PC anyway, I have my separate 21" screen for that. 26" will be used for 360 gaming and films (with my surround sound). Should be good.

I need my 24" Dell Ultrasharp for photo work anyway and don't own a games console. Debating weather I should get a macbook but they're well pricey, will just be hassle carting my pc back n forth when I want to go back home.
ring up the admissions tutors of course

on "lapwing" and other centrally managed networks steam is blocked, college networks vary and there are even some connections which are totally unprotected still if you go wardriving (well, this being cambridge - warcycling)
