History Personal Statement 6

History has always interested me, even from a young age. I have continued to study the subject through G.C.S.E. and 'A' levels

Understanding and interpreting events fascinates me, and I continue to research the subject with great eagerness. My teachers have introduced me to various periods in history I neither would have known about, nor would have considered them as interesting as I have found to be - most notably, 'medieval studies'. Earlier this year, I attended a history conference at Millfield College, which gave me a further insight into medieval studies, which I continue to research. My gap year allow me to actually visit the places I have studied. I have been involved in sport at a high level, representing my previous school in the 1st XI football team. Sport has enabled me to develop my leadership qualities as well as my ability to participate as a team player, not just on the sports field. My involvement in the Harrow Rifle Corps, an army-based scheme, led to various expeditions including climbing Snowdonia in North Wales and training younger members of the Corps. Music is extremely important to me. I have attained Grade 6 on both the violin and piano and have set myself the goal of completing Grade 7 in my gap year. I have played in various concerts and, most memorably, at the Royal Albert Hall last year. As well as classical music, I have a great passion for music of various other genres and a deep knowledge of the contemporary scene. For the last three years, I have successfully organized concerts promoting new musical talent from a wide range of musical genres at Harrow School. In May this year, I helped organize and participate in a walk to raise money for The Passage, a London based charity for the homeless. The current pupils at my old prep school were sponsored to walk for a week and raised a total GBP40,000. The walk spanned from Bilbao to Santiago di Compostela where we visited the great Cathedral, a historical landmark for pilgrims, which was helpful to my studies of the Crusades at the time and an exciting chance to experience something of what a pilgrimage would have been like. I intend to do the walk again early next year as I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I will accompany members of my prep school and encouraging them throughout the journey

Unfortunately, my first attempt at AS level studies was not as successful as I would have hoped, but I feel that I have grown wiser in my attitude to work, and now I am striving for better grades

University is the next stage at which I hope to do well and head for a career in political journalism, for which, I feel, a deeper knowledge of history would be beneficial. I believe that my choice of English and Politics at A-Level has put me in good stead to achieve this goal.
