Very few things in life are as controversial yet as inescapable as law. Potentially, it impacts on religion, culture, sexuality, marriage and even how loud we listen to our favourite songs at night. Individuals can hold different values and lead vastly different lives but the role of the law is to essentially provide a fair and consistent service to all. The interpretability and incomparability of this system attracts me strongly to the subject.
Being a Muslim of Caribbean, African and Arab descent I have a love of cultural diversity. I enjoy the opportunity to explore how we are able to live such separate lives while guided by the same laws and regulations.
Having read 'Media Law' by Duncan Bloy and 'Philosophy of Law: A Very Short Introduction' by Raymond Wacks, I have gained a basic knowledge of what awaits me in this course and now eagerly anticipate the chance to further my understanding. Such texts also help me have more insight into recent cases, from the conflicts between Israel and Palestine and in Afghanistan to the plagiarism of popular songs, and help me to form and justify my own views.
I can also see how aspects of the subjects I currently learn will assist my preparation to study for a degree in Law. English Literature will help me in many ways because it is a subject of constant evaluation and assessment. No matter the text it is possible to find issues applicable to real world situations and therefore to form arguments and opinions, strengthening my debating skills and my ability to reach plausible conclusions. The specificity of the English language is similarly something which reflects the nature of Law. Having studied Mathematics as well means I have plentiful experience in problem solving and applying methods to different situations, while sciences like Chemistry and Biology enhance my research methods, the latter even involving forensics.
My knowledge of the legal profession is not, however, purely derived from study. During a work experience placement at Croydon Council, I was able to sit in on a meeting between executives where legal action was discussed concerning large companies in the area. This was followed by a visit to the planning department where I was able to learn about Land Law in operation.
I anticipate using my experience and knowledge in the present and also in my eventual career, which I hope shall involve the entertainment industry, e.g. if I were to become a media lawyer. I am an avid movie fan with particular appreciation for the comedy, action and world cinema genres. Likewise, I am passionate about music with regular time dedicated to song-writing and previous commitment to a performing arts club which I enjoyed; I like meeting new people and therefore would feel secure working with the public on a daily basis. I am also able to see myself working as well in a team as I would individually as I have achieved success in basketball, representing my county as well as South East England, and also in solo events in Athletics, for which I have won multiple medals. Being a member of my school's prefect team gives me the chance to develop both of these disciplines as I am expected to be responsible, well-organized and maintain strong communication with my fellow prefects.
I look forward to developing my skills and reaching my full potential. I am approaching university in an enthusiastic way and hope that diligent study will project me to a successful career in law.
