First top 5 US universities you think of

Thought as such. But, wouldn't you agree generally science/econ grads are more favourable than art grads? I do agree with you though that a HYP grad will probably get a job over a Oxbridge (any major) grad given the current preference for home students and discrimination against international.

I think it depends what industry were talking about - take banking for example, bar trading and quant roles, an art graduate HAS AN EQUAL CHANCE to a science graduate of securing a job, b/c past the basic numerical test each applicant has to pass (i.e. which is equivalent to GCSE mathematics), it doesn't matter what the person studied at university (as its irrelevant to the job in most cases anyway - i.e. you are trained from fresh at the job).

Management Consultancy is another field, but here, it matters even less whether one is an art or science graduate, none has the inherent advantage past the pre-screen testing (i.e. that of basic numerical and verbal tests).

Thank you for putting words in my mouth - the classic sign of a failed argument on your part, having to distort others argument. Well done on the effort there young one

I've seen plenty who have an arts degree from HYP (i.e. English, History, Classics etc) land jobs on Wall Street for example - where aside from trading and quant jobs, very little math skills are required and the brand-name of HPY is enough to secure an arts major a job.

The same goes MC's to an even greater degree, as they're even bigger prestige whores for HYP and accept even more arts graduates - just look at McKinsey and Bains intake this year for example.

Heck you could get into HYP to study English or History and it would be seen as more prestigious than doing X at Oxbridge, b/c all people really care about is the prestige."

Perhaps I misinterpreted you then.

If someone was to ask you to name 5 US universities that you think are some of the best, what would you say?

It all depends on your major. Caltech and MIT are among the best engineering schools in the world, however if you wanted to major in english these probably wouldnt be such a good choice. I can't say specificaly which are the top five, but some very highly reputable ones are:
Stanford
Harvard
Yale
Princton
Dartmouth
Brown
University of Maryland
University of Pennsylvania
University of California - Berkely
Rennsealer Polytechnic Institute
Duke
John Hopkins (medicine mostly, but if you apply something like english, transfering your major isn't hard)
University of North carolina - Chapel Hill
Columbia
University of Chicago
Northwestern University
rice university
vanderbilt university
georgetown university
emory university
university of Nortre Dame
university of southern california

my list is clearly way over 5 so I am going to stop but there are many more on the top of my head. The US has thousands of Universities, and all depending on major many fluctuate in their position in rankings. I didn't read the whole thread because it got crazy long, but if your overall goal is to be employed in the US, i strongly recomend studying here. I was accepted at Imperial College London for computer science and also at Carnegie Mellon. While imperial appears to have a slightly stronger program, American employers like American-educated employees better, which is why I will most likely end up at Carnegie.

Giving up Imperial for CM? Ahhhh....

You have Rennsealer/UNC/Maryland on there, but not UMich and WashU?

Oh and Johns Hopkins is killer for social sciences--not just medicine. Wouldn't go there for english though.

amazingly i was able to get into imperial and not the top notch tech schools in the US (CM is pretty top notch, but it isnt caltech or MIT), so it is between CM and imperial. leaning towards CM though because I need to get a job. haha.

I was going off the top of my head. UMich only if you go to Ann Arbor, and I havent heard much about WashU. I was just listing the ones I know of off the top of my head. I did forget about U virginia and boston college and tufts though. NYU stern business school is great also.
Actually the Johns Hopkins English program is one of the top in the country also our Creative Writing program (Writing Seminars) is number one in America. Publishers from the top publishing firms actually come to the school to discuss publishing works with students.

Oh what an eleoquent message you've sent me too;

Indicative of your intellect (or lack thereof in your case) no doubt. Now run along little boy...

Little boy? I'm not the twerp called "Manchild" and neither do I base how successful my life is on how other people view my achievements. And please stop patronising me about Asian culture. I am Asian ffs. Sure I may not reside there but my family are asian and yes generations of my family have been to university too including shock horror Oxford, Cambridge and my Uncle went to Harvard and I don't think he has any more bragging rights over anyone else just because he went to Harvard.

Also I never said Medicine was better than any other subject. I was just showing how moronic your statement was about Oxbridge some how being a shameful consolation to Harvard or that was the picture you seemed to be painting. That's where my beef with you arises. Yes the rankings my place Harvard one place above Cambridge or Oxford but that doesn't make it significantly better or a "bastion of toilet cleaners" as you seem to be implying. A lot of people not only here in the UK but around the world and even shock horror from America and Asia have placed a lot of prestige and pride in being able to attend either Oxford or Cambridge.

And dude I'm at university, 4th year in medical school no less so not bad for someone with a lack of intellect.

Question is what on Earth do you with your life apart from coming on here, making moronic statements about institutions that you neither attend and probably never will and by making ridiculous false statements about Asian culture?

If anything you're the immature little boy. You make out as if attending Cambridge is somehow something to be ashamed of because it wasn't Harvard.

Did it ever occur to you that firstly not only was that a ridiculous statements but not everybody who maybe Harvard or Oxbridge "material" ends up going to those institutions through choice? It may surprise you to learn that not an awful lot of good students in the UK can afford to go over the US to study and the same goes for many countries world wide. Also just because student A did Engineering at Imperial and not Cambridge doesn't make him any less inferior. Infact Imperial College is regarded much higher than Cambridge for Engineering. Not everybody is lucky enough to have an endless pot of money provided by mummy and daddy so they can jet off to America to study. And it may shock you to learn that a lot of people don't want to stray too far away from home and would like to visit family during the weekends and holidays. Not that is indicitive of a lack of aspiration.

Also I am aware of the competition in the IB sector, Management/Consultancy but the big investment banks and firms etc look at a whole lot more than just where you studied. They look for all sorts of skills and qualities and let's be fair do you honestly think they'd pass over the highest academically ranked graduate from his class at UCLA who played college sport and got involved in many extra-curriculars in favour of someone that came bottom of the class at Princeton, just scraped a pass and spent all his spare time playing Call of Duty and watching Korean porn whilst eating Wotsits (the most common aetiology of a yellow penis)?

No employer worth their salt would base the reputation of a university based on newspaper rankings. They'd base on their own personal experience of hiring candidates who attended those universities, studied those particular courses etc.

It's funny how you say I lack intellect yet you come up with such moronic statements. I really hope you get into where you want if only to prevent you from topping yourself if you can't tell your Uncle you went to Yale or incase your cousins stuff a lemon squeezer up your rectum because you could "ONLY" manage to get a place to study Medicine at Oxford and not Philosophy at Harvard.

Seriously if that's how narrow your thinking is about education and how the world works, you shouldn't be going to university. You're a disgrace to humanity and an insult to everybody on here who works so damn hard to get into universities be it Harvard, Cambridge, Imperial, Exeter, Durham, Brown or even London Met. Not everybody is going to go to Harvard or Oxford. That doesn't make them any less of a human being than those who did. We should celebrate everyone's achievements be it an MBA from Wharton or a Philosophy degree from Manchester Metropolitan if that is the best they can realistically achieve.

So do us all a favour and just grow up and get some real life experience of university, the world of work and just how people operate socially.

Oh and by the way it's spelt ELOQUENT you person of "low intellect".

I think you're the first person to mention Chicago which I'm surprised given that it genuinely does have a reputation for high academic standards and would probably rate above most of the Ivy League (certainly Brown and Dartmouth).

And anyways this thread is about the first top 5 universities you can think of, not whether Harvard trumps Oxbridge or whether my Uncle Wong and Auntie Wei Wei are going to through acid in my eyes because I went to Oxford instead of Harvard.

And for the record when I named my five: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth they weren't necessarily my opinion of what I considered the top 5 in the US. They were the first 5 American unis that came into my head which is what I thought the OP was originally asking.

If you want me to name what I think the top 5 in the US are then I'd say; Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Johns Hopkins and Cornell because of their medical departments.

No he isn't.

And maybe it is its international reputation? Before I started my economics degree I had never heard of it and similar for friends.

Well in fairness I hadn't heard of a lot of American unis until I came on TSR and when I started at medical school.

Of the ones I had heard were places like Harvard, MIT, Cornell, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and UPenn because of their medical research output of which Johns Hopkins is the American University I've seen most cited in journal articles I've read (Lancet, BMJ etc.) Then you got the other Ivy Leagues like Dartmouth, Brown and Princeton thanks to Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

UCLA never struck me as academically "elite" but nevertheless a good university and often regarded as the ideal picture of an American university nice big campus in a scenic location set against a backdrop of one of the most diverse and thriving cities in the world. Who wouldn't want to spend 4 years of their life their? If it was based on social life alone I'd pick UCLA over Cambridge anyday but sadly I don't think the likes of Beyonce, Scarlett, Jessica and Rhianna are going to be hanging around with me so I best just stay put here in Blighty.

Chicago I heard from here. MIT I knew of before because they do an exchange with Cambridge. Michigan; my cousin went there.

Basically most US universities I've heard through word of mouth or on TSR and just because TSR says so doesn't mean they're the business.

Too bad manboy will be burnt alive by Uncle Wong for going to a TTT dump in New Haven. Maybe had he gone to Oxbridge, Uncle Wong would have only taken a leg.
