UK degree vs US degree

Hi guys,

Is the masters degree in the UK equivalent to the masters degree obtained from the US? Or is it something else entirely? If I get an MSc and a BEng from the UK will I be able to use those degrees to get my engineering license in Canada for work? How about the UK BEng degree (3yrs ) vs the BEng (4 yrs) in US? How do these programs compare?

UK universities are **** compared to their Ivy League counterparts. Harvard, Yale and MIT are in a different world compared to the likes of Oxbridge... Therefore, a degree from the USA is worth much more.

Well no matter ward when it comes to the best oxford and Cambridge can stand toe to toe to the ivies .
Personally i feel when it come to the mid-tier Uni USA seems to have an edge

But look at the amount your paying

Why not ask whoever grants the engineering licenses in Canada and be certain of an accurate answer rather than rely on random guesses passed off as fact from TSRians?

Oxbridge are roughly equivalent to the upper-mid Ivies, from what I've gathered. Unis outside Oxbridge don't compare.

US degrees are longer because they are broader. It's only in second year they start to specialise. They're not necessarily better just because they're longer.

That being said, the question of whether or not UK degrees are recognised over there is a technical matter, one I'm not sure of.

Hey look, I'm from the US, I'm a generalist, I majored in everything (/sarcasm). Also if you look at the majority of US students they attend community colleges which dont really even count. I have a friend whos been in the US higher education system for 9 years. This year his classes include Piano, Yoga and Weightlifting.

So is a BEng from US (4 years) = BEng from UK (3 years)? Or Masters from US (2 years) = Masters from UK (1 year). I know that for some countries, their BEng holds the same 'value' as a MEng from the UK.

If you look at the efficiency of uni's i.e. research quality to funding ratio, the top UK uni's are clear winners.

You should probably check/call with whatever body governs the engineering license in Canada.

This whole UK vs. US degree debate is incredibly stupid. It's completely subjective. It depends on what you're studying, what you want your job to be, where you want to live, etc.

The best school for a person depends on the background and future ambitions of that person.

Note that you will have to write and pass a professional practice examination on professional practice, ethics, engineering law and liability, as quoted from the website.

Why on earth would you even bring up community colleges on this thread? They have nothing to do with a Master's program or the OP.

United States have better universities. End of. Apart from Oxbridge, name me some other UK unis that can stand a chance in competing academically and in terms of reputation and prestige to the likes of HYP, MIT, Caltech, UPenn, Columbia etc.

US universities are a a lot richer than their british counterparts, lets face it UK universities are starved for cash. Take a look at LSE, who everybody knows favors international students because they want their cash.

Get your degree in Canada. Problem solved.
If you want to work in Canada, a Canadian degree is the right way to go.
And Canadian Universities, such as McGill and U of T, stand their ground on the global rankings.
