Does it cost money to join societys?
If yes then how much and where does the money go?

Thankyou thats good to know! i live about 35 mins away so not too far but i didnt want to be on my own if people had made friends with the people they are living there with if they are moving in before freshers week

You'll still make friends with them, especially on the course your doing and there are meeting points in the city for halls that don't have fresher reps, mature, local and international students which is spankey van dykes on goldsmith street, so you can meet people at that, and then join everyone else for the night time activities.

One tip is probably not to rush off home straight after lectures, unless you obviously have to get to work but stay around for a while and socialise with them, suggest going for something to eat or a drink etc that way you won't be out of it with socialising. You'll probably make friends with someone and spend time at their halls all the time, what are you studying?

Usually it gets spent on hire charges for venues to practice, or hold meetings and then goes back into the society but each society varies.

Thanks thats reassuring im studying law with criminology but i also have a friend from my area who will be living on the clifton campus so i can meet with him too i was just worried that people may have already formed sort of 'friendship groups'

Sorry i thought sports clubs and societys were the same thing.
Does it cost money to join sports clubs?

Slightly different as some regard themself as a society and otehrs a sports club, it costs to join both but sports clubs you have to have gym/ sports membership which is a £100 per year as that covers insurance etc. Then its a small fee per year on top I think depending on the club, plus kit costs etc but you do get taster sessions and tryouts in the first two weeks of term so no need to spend on things you may never use, and you don't have to pay for gym membership for first two weeks either as thats free so people can sample it.

Most friendship groups really don't form until halway through induction week, and usually its with people on your course or society, sometimes who you live with if your lucky in that respect but most often not. You will be fine, just try out lots of societies in freshers befroe you have to pay for them and see if any of them suit you and you'll meet lots of people that way.

Also ill be in private accomodation, as in not an official nottingham trent one.

Its during Fresher's week, usually the first three or four days maximum are when they give you all the course info, its during the day but your usually finsihed no later than maybe 2pm or so.
