What the hell is classification rankings? Oh my gosh I haven't heard of it!

it is somewhere in the textbook

Classification is the method used by scientists to order living organisms. All species have a unique classification that results in a binomial name. Vertebrates are an example of a classification group. Keys can be used to help to identify individual organisms.

[h="1"]Kingdom to species[/h][h="2"]Classification[/h]You will remember from your Key Stage 3 studies that species with similar characteristics are put into groups, and that this is called classification. Remind yourself of the basics of classification.
[h="2"]Kingdoms[/h]The first rank in this system is called a kingdom. There are five kingdoms, based upon what an organism's cells are like:

1.

animalia (all multicellular animals)

2.

plantae (all green plants)

3.

fungi (moulds, mushrooms, yeast)

4.

prokaryotae (bacteria, blue-green algae)

5.

protoctista (Amoeba, Paramecium).

[h="2"]Further divisions[/h]There are several further ranks before we reach a particular species. In order, these are:

kingdom

phylum

class

order

family

genus

species.

For example, lions have the following classification:

kingdom - animal

phylum - vertebrate

class - mammal

order - carnivorous

family - cat

genus - big cat

species - lion.

From memory, the only thing I remember them asking is complete the section for class and family for a sepcies who was in the same genus as another, to who they gave all different taxons for

They wouldnt really, they may give the classification of an organism, and then the same for close relative, and ask to fill in the blanks on the relatives classification, usually its just copying the same stuff, you'll get it

only seen one question
saying name the 5 classification ranking that all
the specification doesn't specify that we need to know all 7 groups for taxonomy. Does it?
Is there any point in me learning transpiration if it isn't in the specification?

Kinky people can often find great sex... my biology teacher had an interesting imagination

king prawn curry or fat greasy sausages

my bio teacher weighs a ton...great at teaching though.
does anybody have a idea of which core practical that might come up

is there a way of remembering the classification rankings?

Keep Kingdom
Ponds Phylum
Clean Class
Or Order
Frogs Family
Get Genus
Sick Species

I'm going I've revised way too much, I'm probably gonna wake up early and go back on this thread but just in case,
GOOD LUCK Every Body; we'll hopefully ALL get good grades

good luck to you as well
Please can someone give me the steps involved in the totipotency practical?
thanks guys
Not sure if we really need this but what actually happens in G1, S1 and G2 for interphase.

heey just joined here  what are ur expectations for 2mmorows exam bio unit 2?

stem cells are so confusing!

so when two haploid gamete fuse, a diploid zygote forms (cells are TOTIPOTENT)
then the zygote divides into an embryo after like 5 days = inner mass = PLURIPOTENT

could someone just confirm

thanks! x
