That was super interesting, thanks for the link :h:

I liked France

France's entry could actually sing though...

I would have voted for France if anyone at all. Très amusant .

Oh come on. A drag artist winning is the definition of 'cheap and tacky'. She was only averagely good vocally; the Netherlands was far better, and Spain was the standout in terms of actual music/vocal ability.

Anyway, I'm not so sure it was just the risqué dancing the juries objected to. According to the Guardian, the group are supposed to be quite pro-Russian. It makes you wonder if the entirety of this year's show was not, as you want to believe, about the music, but just a political statement intended to snub Russia.

If you think all drag acts are cheap and tacky, I can assure you that you've not been to any halfway decent ones. Living in Brighton, I do have a little expertise on this subject.

Personally I thought her vocals were exceptionally good, and definitely at least on par with NL/SE's acts. The novelty factor definitely gave Austria the edge in the voting, but that's besides the point here - all three acts were indisputably significantly better than Poland.

I thought it was terrible on the night, but TBH it does rather get stuck in your head after a while. :p:

It's a drag queen :dunce:

Her name can plausibly be interpreted as meaning "vagina penis"

It's not artistic and this is not the gay rights equivalent of the I have a dream speech...:erm:

And the Polish act was Mozart reborn in comparison? I think not. Conchita had way more class than half of the acts this year.
Everyone's commenting on how Poland won votes because of the sleaze (which I'm sure is true to an extent) but the article OP linked to has Poland topping the popular vote in three countries (UK, Ireland and Ukraine) which have huge Polish ex-pat communities, which is surely also a factor?
I think it's retarded that people are voting on the basis of how their appearance is.

She's not a drag artist she's transgender.
It was a disgrace that the Netherlands didn't win to be honest.

Stuff like this is exactly why the juries exist. Poland's act was utterly terrible, and if it wasn't for the sleazy soft porn-esque posing they did on stage nobody would've voted for them at all. Cheap and tacky acts should not be allowed to win Eurovision in my opinion, it's supposed to be a music contest after all.

This. I thought our submission was far far better than the Polish submission...

(I only knew about this stuff after BTW. I don't watch Eurovision)
Poland wasn't the best act though and I think we all know why people would have voted for them. Conchita had a good message and the song is pretty good to listen to if you need a bit of motivation.

You threw me down but I'm gonna fly, RISE LIKE A PHOENIX, OUT OF THE ASHES

I should have been more specific: a drag act winning just because it's a drag act is cheap and tacky. And in my opinion, she definitely won because of that novelty factor. She was good, but wouldn't have stood out if not for her appearance.

(most drag acts don't go in for the bearded look - that's just as ostentatious as what the Polish girls did, really)

But regardless, I don't really mind her winning as much as I mind the structural setup of Eurovision where the juries get so much weight, and which allows them to pull off political stunts in place of a cross-national evening of lighthearted entertainment.

That's not what her official Eurovision page says...

Everything I've found online suggests that Conchita Wurst is an act :dontknow:

After they didn't get any points from us, I regretted not voting for them

No, I believe she's a drag artist and doesn't identify as female when out of character. Some media outlets may have let that distinction blur a bit for the purpose of their editorial message, though .

But the juries didn't favour her as much as the televote did?

Yeah, and that's why I didn't make the OP anything to do with Conchita. She deserves her win since she got the televotes; and my point is, Poland deserved a lot better, because they got the televotes.
If you care about who actually wins at Eurovision, you're doing it wrong. It's entertaining, but the reason it was created was the bring post-wartime Europe together. Barely anyone I know who watches it actually votes.

Plus, if you look at the recent winners at least (I don't know about earlier ones) they were all more-or-less pre-decided by having released their singles/marketed extensively all over Europe, rather than being decided on the night. Lena's 'Satellite', for instance, was already at #1 in a shedload of countries, so it made sense that she was going to win.

Conchita was the only act I'd heard anything about before the competition, and it was obvious she was going to be backed by the judges. That said, I do agree with you that the judges votes shouldn't impact the votes quite so dramatically.

The UK jury placed Austria third. It was the public vote that swayed it into first place.

We can't complain about tactical voting in the former Soviet Bloc countries and how they must reform their voting practises without applying the same reforms to our voting, because clearly the UK public can't be trusted. Poland's song was utter tripe, there was no way it deserved points.

Thank god for the jury!

I hated the song and I thought immediately it was just musical pornography. It was absolute rubbish.

Conchita is Tom's drag persona and when in drag they take on female pronouns but when not in drag Tom takes on gender neutral pronouns.

Interestingly, the UK popular vote went to Poland, but as the jury voted it last it got no points.

See my reply above to Dez.

Actually, both the UK jury and public put Austria third, but they were sufficiently split on other countries for that to enable Austria to take the 12 points.

They got the televotes because people were watching on mute.

It deserved no points so rightfully got no points. The song was crap. And since it's the Eurovision Song Contest, it's right that it's judged on those merits.

Or in Poland's case, it's lack of merits.
