Nicky Morgan is my MP, she's made a bloody fast rise to the top, she only became a junior minister (in the Treasury) about 9 months ago, and since then she's been on the up. It feels weird to think that the person representing me is the new Gove. I expected her to be moving on up, but only to somewhere relatively junior like Culture or Transport with Javid going big places due to how they call him a future leader et al. But I suppose Cameron is keen to appeal to the female voter, which is definitely good in a way, it's long overdue that there are more women in the cabinet.
I actually quite like Gove though, he is vilified as this evil, clueless dictator but I think that's just union PR, it's a lot easier to sell a cause if you got a Big Bad to unite the public against, we all love that trope. Whenever I ask someone with an irrational hatred of Gove why they hate him so much, they can give a couple of very weak reasons, but usually not a very convincing argument. I'm not going to say that he was perfect or that I agreed with everything he was doing, but I support bringing back a bit of rigour to our education system and I really hope it continues under Morgan. Teachers are overworked and underpaid, which something needs to be done about, but it's not unique to Gove or the Tories. The union leaders fronted an extremely aggressive approach to Gove from day one, they'll complain that he's doing everything out of ideology, but their main issue is also one of ideology, not that I really expected better from the big unions.
I have no idea what Morgan's going to be doing in the role, I don't think I've ever seen her talk about education before. I suspect this is actually an attempt to sort of push education to the side for the final stretch, put someone relatively unknown and quiet in there so that it doesn't become one of the big issues of the election and the Tories can break out the big guns on things they feel more comfortable winning back voters with: the economy, immigration and Europe. Not that they have a chance of winning them back.
