General Engineering vs Electrical Engineering
Hi,
I have applied to study engineering, originally thinking that I wanted to study mechanical but have now been offered electrical instead. The offers of places I have are
Durham - General Engineering
Bristol - Electronic and Electrical Engineering
Bath - Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (however have decided against Bath as there is no opportunity to study abroad for a year)
Does anyone have any advice as to which course is best and which university is the best, as I don't know whether an Electrical Engineering degree from Bristol would be better respected than a General Engineering degree from Durham?

General engineering can be a pain to be honest because you end up studying stuff you might not like (making it a pain to revise). No one will care whether one course is more respected than the other it will come down to what youre applying for and what skills you have to offer.
With a general engineering degree you tend you specialise in later years (which is good if you aren't sure of what engineering discipline to choose as it gives you time to decide). On the other hand you if you already know what discipline you want to study then a general engineering degree would be waste of your own time IMO...why learn other things you don't like when you already know what discipline you're going to do from the get go?
My university has a 'general engineering' first year and I've studied quite a bit of electronics/electrical engineering & programming stuff and to be honest I wouldn't say I was a huge fan of that stuff
Although in my case it's only 1 year that's "general" the rest are specialised to my degree.

You won't actually graduate with a "general" engineering degree, it'll still be in a particular discipline. What the "general" means is that you start off studying a broad range of topics and then only later on in your degree do you actually choose which discipline you'd like to graduate in.
If you originally thought you wanted to do mechanical then why are you considering now doing electrical, unless you've had a change of heart?

However as it was a last minute change I haven't had the opportunity to investigate this course as much as I would have liked so am unsure whether to accept it or not!

Where else have you applied? I wouldn't settle on a course you're not too sure about.
