How do I fix this?

I'm guessing you've already got or updated it to the latest version? This has happened to me a couple of times for some unknown reason.

I usually just do a system restore to an earlier time where it was working.

You're using Firefox I'm guessing? It’s been like this for a few days.

They have blocked to protect users from hackers, as flash has loads of security issues, there is no current update for fix them. You can allow Firefox to use flash player manually though.

No, I'm actually using Chrome?

Presumably you have tried to update it?

I've had instances where it needed to be stripped off the system completely and re-installed, before it settled down. Sometimes when it has problems communicating with the update server you may also get the repetitive prompt to upgrade.

I've tried, but I don't really know how to do it. I was hoping someone on here could talk me through it.

Add/Remove Programs (Dependant on your Operating System).

Look for Adobe Flash Player > Uninstall.

Restart (if only to appease installers), and go to https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?fpchrome

* Chrome will no doubt complain that it is inbuilt to the browser. Don't let it try to update for you, just download it from the link above, making sure to untick the McCrapee 'offer'.

Should be a fairly straight process of installing. Next > Next > Finish.

Alternatively just go to https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?fpchrome and try to download the update. May not even need to uninstall.

I've followed this advice, and the message 'Adobe Flash Player was blocked because it is out of date' is still appearing at the top of my browser (Google Chrome).

Go to Chrome.

Type about : plugins (without the spaces) into the address bar and press enter.

Do you have an entry similar to this ?

Adobe Flash Player - Version: 18.0.0.203Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0

If so, does it say Enable or Disable under it?

No, the version I've got is 15.0.0.239 and Shockwave 15.0 r0, and then it says next to it 'Download Critical Security Update'. Do I need to click this?

I've already got it enabled, and I've ticked the box that says 'Always allowed?'.

Yep, install the update.
I have exactly the same thing going on.

When I click update plug-in on that annoying little yellow bar that keeps dropping down and follow the instructions it does absolutely nothing.

It's annoying!!!

It goes to this screen: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/6258784

I've actually been on this page before, a little earlier - but I didn't know what to do.

In that case, go back to about : plugins. Click Disable on the plug-in, close Chrome, re-open and see what it does.

If you downloaded Flash independently of Chrome earlier it may kick in to life.

*Not using a MAC are you?

It's disabled now, and it appears to be working? And no, I'm not on a Mac.

Sounds like Chrome is just throwing a wobbly then.

Leaving as it is now should be fine.

I was wrong, it still isn't working. Some of my YouTube videos that I've embedded on here aren't showing up properly, which I'm assuming is to do with the fact that I've disabled the Flash Player.

Sounds like you may need to reset Chrome as this seems to be the problem.

If you go to the options Three little horizontal lines at top right of Chrome)

Settings > Then click on the blue Show Advanced Settings > Scroll to the bottom and click reset.

It will clear some settings, which you may want to check before confirming.

Once it's done, see what happens. It could be that the Chrome's Flash plug in is messed up.
