Got offered Belfast, Cardiff and Glasgow whereas my first option was London 😩 If I accept one of the 3 locations what's the likelihood of getting transferred back to London within a year or two assuming people leave/fail tsp?

Pretty much nil. Your also expected to stay in your location for at least 2 years after finishing the programme. Unless you managed to get promoted, but even then you aren't allowed to apply for internal vacancies whilst your on a development programme..

I don't think it really matters a great deal tbh. The degree you gain within the TSP isn't going to impact your earning potential significantly should you leave HMRC. Someone with years of experience at Grade 7 level will be in demand regardless of having the ITP or not.

If you were a CA who gained the ITP then you might fare better in the private sector with less experience, than say someone who completed the TSP and tried to make the jump with less than 2 years experience.

Generally though I would say the TSP offers pretty good salary advancement in your early career, compared with private sector schemes. However after a while you might get tempted away due to slow salary progression you experience as a G7. It would take you an estimated 16 years to hit the max in your pay band (assuming you got a 1% increase each year and there are no increases to the max in that time!).

Sorry, going to have to disagree with you on this one. Of course it matters which programme you choose, since it affects the quality of learning you will get in the next 4 years. Having been trained by HMRC tutors for my VAT programme in the last 1.5 years, I can tell you that the teaching quality is excellent, since the tutors have vast experience within their respective HMRC departments, where they have faced complex issues on a day to day basis. Therefore, they are able to use very good (real life) examples to help us understand a particular concept of tax.

However my worry is that any external tutor will not have this same level of knowledge or experience, therefore quality of teaching will not be as good.

Has anyone been offered anywhere that wasn't in their choices?

It's worth remembering that the TSP makes you desirable to external employers not just because of the qualifications you gain but also your knowledge of HMRC's internal processes and things like your contacts within HMRC.

That is absolutely correct, especially regarding internal processes. I have had a long conversation recently with someone employing for a Big 4 firm, and he mentioned that having HMRC experience is very beneficial when it comes to looking for a role in the Big 4 firm, since you will be able to add a lot of value.
Hi all, I've been offered Wealth and Mid-sized Business in Liverpool - my first choice. Beyond happy. Congratulations to everyone else!

I don't disagree with you regarding the quality of HMRC training, having experienced it myself. I was primarily referring to the external recognition of the two qualifications and their comparative value in the private sector. Assuming the individual had recently completed either qualification and therefore had only a year or two experience.

My own concern over the ITP is the that it appears to be marketed at CA's and people who have already completed accountancy or tax related qualifications. It may be harder for people external to HMRC to get instantly to the level expected, given the way the course appears to be delivered. Furthermore how much support you might gain from colleagues in preparing for the assessments is debatable.

Besides the anecdotes provided by HMRC tutors can be insightful. I wonder if the department will pay the annual fee to ICAS after the course is completed?

Hi everyone,

Congratulations to those who were given locations of their choice.

I was given one of the locations I put down. I am happy with the location, however I can't help wondering if I would be offered my 1st location if someone rejected it, or if it would go straight to the reserve list. I feel it wouldn't be strict merit order if the latter happened...

I was also given the offer of opting for the ICAS. I have qualms about this. The ICAS's tax qualification hasn't been around for very long has it? And HMRC tax professionals who have had the in house learning seem to be fine. I don't think I would want to be one of the participants of a pilot study.

Finally, will we remain in the same business area throughout our 4 years? I thought we would have placements and get to move around so we could decide which area was best for us?

TSP people get streamed at the beginning of Year 3. You can express a preference for where you would like to go but its not guaranteed and dependent on business need.

In Year 1 and 2 you generally work a variety of different types of case to gain experience, i.e SME, MSB etc.

Thanks for your speedy response.

I see. But then why have we been placed in specific areas? For example, I am in individual and small business.

I also was offered a place on the ATSP, and was told my location back in my original email on 11 April, I assumed it would be the same for all ATSP candidates. Hopeflully you get the location you want anyway, I came through a similar route as you have, although with an extra two years in the middle on the BDDP!

Well for people who were offered ATSP London the specific roles and offices locations haven't been allocated yet.

I've been offered Liverpool too, in Individuals and Small Business. My first choice too! Have you any idea where in Liverpool it's based?

Because you need a home  while your training.

The departments workforce isn't exactly evenly spread and 'local' demand within the regional centers will vary.

This is why there will be a lot of LB based in London for example.

The Liverpool Regional Centre for 2,800 to 3,100 staff is supposed to open in 2018-20 as they begin closing the existing offices. So the office may end up moving to the RC before you complete your training.

Hi - Imperial Court is the HMRC office near Dale Street but I think there's a couple of other offices too. Once the regional office opens everyone will be in there so don't suppose it matters too much.
