I'm not an international student. I normally reside in England.

I haven't experienced much of the nightlife (yet) but I've been to a few pubs with friends and there are loads of them here.

There are a ridiculous amount of societies so you'll always find one that suits you

What about the professors? How are the academics there? Is it more self learning via experiences, or the traditional lectures?

I can only comment for the School of Engineering and the School of Informatics here. The lecturers I have are very helpful. They're willing to take questions during the lecture and often stay for a few minutes at the end to answer any questions.

They also use an online tool called Piazza so you can ask questions to the lecturers anonymously, and they're usually pretty quick when it comes to responding.

I'm not going to lie, sometimes the lecturer (or the lecture content itself) can be very boring, so you will have to do a lot of self learning (that's the nature of university work) but there is plenty of support available through the tutorials/workshops or something called InfBase which is a drop in type of session where you can get help from those who are often in the third year of their degree.

Hello @Blue_Cow. I have applied for the A.I and C.S.(GG47) first year entry and i was wondering if maybe i should change for second year.

Had a look at the first year courses and I've already covered like most Maths topics in there(like really thoroughly), and despite not having worked with Java I have been studying algorithms and stuff in C for 4 years now and I know Python pretty well too, so learning the sintax of Java wouldn't take me more than a week(at max) I suppose.

What do you think I should do provided your experience so far? Thank you.

If you meet the academic requirements for second-year entry, I see no reason as to why you shouldn't apply for it. Judging by what you've said, you also have the relevant computing/mathematical experience, too.

The disadvantage of 2nd year entry is that you have either no or a reduced timetable for outside courses. For the outside courses you can choose anything from art to languages to business to science to humanities and more. 1) Is it possible to find and get tech related employment in the city; especially in the third and fourth year?
2) How is the start-up culture in the university and Edinburgh in general? What products/services are students building?
3) How has the diverse nationalities/cultures effected your study? Do you feel as though you have formed global connections during your study?

1) Quite a few tech companies around Edinburgh. A few of them do advertise on the university's intranet.

2) I haven't looked into 'start-ups' myself, but I've seen a few advertisements for a service called LAUNCH.ED which is supposedly a service that offers help to students/graduates with this sort of thing http://launch.ed.ac.uk/launch-ed-services/

3) A lot of mainland Chinese students and also plenty of your fellow Americans here! I don't think I've necessarily formed a 'global connection', but it hasn't affected my studies negatively or positively. I'm sure if I made more of an effort to socialise, I'll form more bonds, but so far my friends are mainly Scottish/English/American/EU/EEA
