The "blackface" story in Virginia has turned into farce.

The Governor, facing pressing calls to resign had a catastrophic press connference in which he admitted dressing up as Michael Jackson and doing a moonwalk, and said that he HAD blacked up, but he regretted it because shoe polish takes so long to come off. He had to be restrained from recreating the moonwalk on stage by his embarrassed wife.

He is still in post, however. Why I hear you ask? Well the next in line, if he were to resign, pending an election is the Lieutenant Governor. He HASN'T put on blackface in the path because he actually is black. But he can't take over because he is under a cloud over claims of sexual harassment arising from the #METOO movement. Third in line is the Attorney General, and he can't take over because, guess what? A photo has emrged of HIM in blackface too. What are the chances of that statistically? Does every future Democrat politician have to black up his face and sing "Mammy!" before he has a chance of getting a job or something?? Finally we come to the majority leader in the Virginia Legislature. He can't take over because he once EDITED a book which contained white people in blackface. You couldn't make it up.

So what is the takeaway here? That in the most powerful country in the history of the world, its politicians are so hobbled by the lunacy of political correctness and identity politics that the Governorship of a State is determined by who, and who did not, put on black boot polish thirty years ago as a student prank.

The coal miners covered in soot, aren't the half of it. You might think this is all a joke but it isn't. We have yet to approach peak Woke. Ask the Governor and other senior politicians in the Commonwealth of Virginia...

Firstly, miners were on strike for months before the general strike. Why are they covered in coal dust? They weren’t working.

Secondly the walls of that room are made out of vertical wooden planks, not panelling. You don’t find that in a Welsh pit village.

Those beer glasses don’t look like a British 1920s beer glass to me.

The advert is for Bass Burton Ale on draught. Again that seems unlikely for a pub in a pit village.

I am not convinced about the date, that it was taken in the UK or that the men were miners rather than tunnelling navvies.

It's on the cover of a book about the home front during WWI. Definitely look like pitmen, definitely taken in UK (the advertising is all for British brands).

It is in fact neither a photo of WWI nor of the General Strike.

It is a photo of South Wales Miners.

The photo is in the archive of the Topical Press Agency which now belongs to Getty Images.

It dates from 1912 and its original caption was:-

"Coal Strike Crisis
A group of coal-blacked South Wales colliers relax over a drink in a local pub and discuss the strike situation."

I think you are right. This was a serious article. However, the problem, as I said earlier in the thread, is his inability to articulate what the issue is.

The issue isn’t that some long dead miners went drinking in their work dirt. The issue is why did a 21st century Arizona restaurateur choose that image to hang on his wall? What was that restaurateur saying and why did the author find his statement, not the statement of the photographer or the drinkers offensive?

We can’t answer that question because the author has chosen not to share the context of the image on the restaurant wall with us. The image is not racist; the placing of it on the wall might be, but we do not know enough to form that opinion.

The issue is that everyone has to pay their bills somehow and some people attach themselves to the race-industry in order to do so. We make it too serious and it would be nothing but laughable and contemptible if the whole thing didn't have unintended consequences.
