english lit wider reading

i'm doing english lit a level and our teacher emphasised the importance of wider reading (especially for AO3/context). i was wondering if i should just read the books or keep notes for themes/setting etc. if i were to keep notes it would take longer but i think it would be worth it. if anyone could reply with how they approach wider reading i would really appreciate it! (i do dystopia btw)
I'm doing A2 English lit now and I've done quite a lot of wider reading so I've used a word document and made summaries of the plot of the book, key themes and links to the texts that I'm doing in the exam. If you want you could put quotes down as well but you don't need them to get an A*
