YouTube Cracks Down On Racist, Sexist And Similar Insults

YouTube is taking another step to curb hateful and violent speech on its site.

The video streaming company said it will now take down videos that lob insults at people based on race, gender expression, sexual orientation or other “protected attributes.” The Google-owned company will also prohibit veiled threats of violence, taking a step further into moderating what people can say on the videos they create and upload.

YouTube has been slapped with criticism from politicians, viewers and video creators for the material it allows on and bans from the site. The site has been accused of allowing and fostering hate speech and extremism and creating spaces for harassment to linger online, along with other digital sites that allow people to upload their own material, such as Facebook and Twitter.

YouTube has been reviewing its policies and guidelines for about two years, Matt Halprin, the company’s vice president of trust and safety, said in an interview. He said the company tries to find a balance between allowing freedom of expression and keeping hateful speech to a minimum .

YouTube has long prohibited outright threats of violence. In June, it updated its hate speech policies to ban videos with white supremacist and Neo-Nazi viewpoints.

But the company also received significant pushback that month after it allowed a video to remain on the site from conservative commentator Steven Crowder. In the video, Crowder used homophobic slurs aimed at Vox reporter Carlos Maza.

Maza publicly criticized YouTube for its decision but the company said it didn’t violate any anti-harassment policies.

That will change today. YouTube confirmed that Crowder’s videos about Maza now violate its new policies and will be removed.

YouTube also announced it would take action against channels that have been found to repeatedly harass people in videos. In many cases, it will “demonetize” the channel, YouTube said, by turning off any ad revenue those videos would normally generate for their creators.

YouTube already demonetized Crowder’s channel.

The new anti-harassment and violence policies also apply to public officials, though videos will still remain on the site if they are parts of news stories, documentaries or other educational material.

YouTube is also rolling out a comment review tool to video owners that will, by default, hold back comments the company’s algorithms have flagged as potentially inappropriate until creators have reviewed them. Video creators can turn off that setting if they want.

300 hours of video are uploaded to youtube every minute, policing this is going to be near impossible.
lol
How would this work
The YouTube HQ needs a serious staff cleansing; they harass real creators with this random crap whilst keeping a child groomer they're aware of on their platform. They haven't been doing very well for a long time.

You think white supremacy isn't a real issue? That tackling hate is "random crap"?

It is probably one of the most pressing issues in the world today.

I was actually referring more to people like Idubbz (read: real creators) who get old videos taken down by crap like this, which happened today. Along with other decent youtubers who constantly get copy right strikes and demonitised for saying words like 'Alabama'.

I have nothing against demonitising actual white supremacy, but the people who are usually targeted by these silly policies are random creators, pal. Not sure why you thought I said white supremacy wasn't a real issue.

I figure you've only just discovered Youtube?

You mean there’s things on YouTube other than cats falling into boxes or pushing objects off tables?

No

wtf :headfire:
sad to hear this.

Yes in principle its good to take down offensive things.. but even a kid knows that the difficulty is in deciding what is offensive.

There will be a lot of right-wing channels removed for making vidoes on trans issues, LGBT/Race issues which weren't offensive at all to the vast majority of even the people in those groups.. but a few offended people will complain, and they will be gone.

Its things like this that should signal the change to how social media works. If you are going to edit/curate the content on your sight in a signfiicant way - then you are a publication, not a platform, and should be liable for what you publish.
Adults are perfectly capable of ignoring stuff they don’t like. Children who may find stuff upsetting shouldn’t be on YouTube in the first place. This is obviously a way for Alphabet inc to further it’s political agenda, whatever that may be. At this point, YouTube operates at a loss so it doesn’t matter to YouTube who they allow or don’t allow on their platform.

Isn't idubbz the man who terrified a woman youtuber by pretending to be a fan so he could get close to her and shout the n-word at largest volume? It's a rhetorical question. He is.

Yes, what a surprise that anti-black racists are getting caught up in the crackdown on white supremacists! (sarcasm)

The same girl who also said the N-word repeatedly?
Yeah, her

I'd also like to point out that was not the video to be taken down anyway. So pointing that out about him doesn't even apply to this policy.

It's all good for as long as they take down all anti-white racism and anti-men sexism in equal measures, if they don't... they'll be biased.

lol just because she is also an anti-black racist doesn't mean that his anti-black racism is justified.

You seem to be unintentionally implying that there is indeed a culture of normalised anti-blackness in Youtube, which means this kind of action is well overdue.

It will likely be ran through their speech recognition like they already do for their closed captioning system and anything problematic will be auto demonitised subject to human review or appeal.

I think you're confused as to why idubbz said the n-word when he went to her meet and greet :s
