Law llb or social work ba

Which be better to do a law or social work degree? Im 22 interested in human rights and bettering peoples lives however due to my lack of work experience one university is will to consider me for social work. Im interested in both degrees I understand social work would be a starting salary and I could always do a law degree after or do the sqe plus 2 years experience in order to be a lawyer .

Social Work is 3 years so that's good whereas to become a solicitor it wouldn't be 3 years.

I would say go with what interests you. There's different specialism in Law so if you pick a law firm that has the speciality you want which is Human Rights Law.

There's also the option off doing one one of these social worker schemes like https://thinkahead.org/ but even those do ask for experience.
There's Apprenticeship law options too.

what do you mean due to your lack of work experience? you think you need that to study law?

you need to study what interests you academically. no, it doesn't matter at this point whether you want to become a social worker or a solicitor as law is not a vocational degree and does not equal working in law; indeed a friend of mine went into social work immediately after graduating from an LLB - no did not have to do a Masters in social work so i would disregard the advice from the above user. and, as you've said, you can still become a solicitor with a non-law degree; but fyi human rights is an extremely niche sector and chances are you won't end up there.

have you studied law before and were you good at it? if not go for social work cuz studying law takes a lot of effort if you go to a semi decent uni.

Hi,

I realise you are not looking at Master’s courses, but I just wanted to send some postgraduate options through, if you are still deliberating about if a law, or non-law path is right for you.

I have just completed an LLM in international human rights law and I have secured employment in a family law firm (with an international children’s rights specialism).

The University of York offers an LLM in international human rights law (primarily for LLB graduates like I was), but the university also offers a course in applied human rights (MA) for individuals who have not studied law at an undergraduate level.

I also start my SQE1 preparation course in January, with the aspiration of becoming a family law solicitor, with a focus on human rights.

I am happy to discuss anything I have stated above, if you think it will be beneficial to you😊

Well social work usually requires at least 6 months work experience in settings such as care work or working with vulnerable people e.g child care / volunteering to help the homeless. I've spoken to different universities and all but one said I needed work experience to be considered for an interview.

I admit I would prefer to work in human rights however like you said it is a niche sector. I haven't studied law at college but I have read law books and looked at the various sectors but at the end of the day I would like to make a difference regardless of if it's in human rights or cooperate law.

I was looking into a sociology degree but I don't feel the career prospects would suit myself.

Hey, first of congrats on completing your llm, sounds like you have an amazing journey ahead of you.

Yeah, I've been debating between the two disciplines I wasn't sure if I would be better off studying an llb or social. Thank you so much for the advice, it does give me hope in which ever path I take.

Hi Rose_99

Lots of way into law so I thought you would find this route map useful: https://www.lawcareers.net/Starting-Out/Beginners-Guide-Career-Law/Legal-Career-Paths

As pointed out, you can do law after a social work! Highly recommend that you try to get a couple of taster days in each role before you decide. It will really open up your eyes to what is involved in each role. You can also get voluntary work in both sectors. I volunteered as a befriender for social services and I have volunteered as an advisor for Citizens Advice. Great way to see more.

Hope that helps!
