I think the Independent is more student friendly. I actually read The Times, though, and struggle to see the need for two leftish newspapers when one will do.

why people read The Independent over The Guardian, and vice versa.

They are both published by unpatriotic socialists and their editors should be horse whipped and then put in the stocks.
I read The Independent because they give more credence to international stories than The Guardian, because they are not affiliated with any political party, because I can find a wide range of intellectual opinions in the commentary pages, and because The Independent has a broader focus than The Guardian on the type of stories it regularly covers - notably on environmental and technological news, which is of great interest to me.

I specifically do not read The Guardian because the paper broadly supports Labour.

Hi Mary, what a interesting debate! It's great to hear what people think about the differences between the 2...I've never really had a particular paper I'm loyal too...finding out exactly WHY people chose one or the other is a tough call! Can't wait to hear what people say!!

It is disloyalty as exemplified by rags like the Guardian and the Independent that brought this once great nation to it's knees.

I read The Guardian over The Independent simply because it's the one my parents read so I just tend to buy it for myself. I like the columnists in The Guardian too. They're like friends now. :h:

I love the Independent, I've always liked the way it's headline is nearly always something completely obscure.

Then again the Guardian do have Charlie Brooker, so it's a tough call.

Its all about the financial times people.

Anyway I read the guardian because it has pretty decent coverage on sports and films etc

Unpatriotic? Is it unpatriotic to highlight the gaping flaws in British society and our political system? To expose the work of amoral/immoral corporations? [Oh Hai Trafigura!] To question rather than to accept?

It is as British as anything else to challenge beliefs and to seek the truth, rather than to accept lies fed us by our undemocratic government.

What papers do you read? The Times? Sun? Mail? Certainly the first two clearly promote the agenda of Rupert Murdoch and not of their readerbase, and the latter two are guilty of incredibly shoddy, base journalism.

I grew up with the Independent so I'm used to the layout and columnists and things. Quite a lot of what's in the Guardian pisses me off because it seems so much more agenda-driven, partisan and dogmatic, as well. I mean it probably isn't, I just get that vibe from it.
Now I'm no longer at home I only buy the paper on a Friday though for the Arts Books and Entertainment magazine :yep:

edit: And there's Dominic Lawson and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown to fume over, can't underestimate that.
I read the Guardian occasionally for Charlie Brooker and Steven Fry's columns, Home Clubber, the girly relationship and self-help columns and a few other things.

You're confusing disloyalty with humanitarian progression. You've also missed the point of life.

The Independent for me. It covers a wide range and I find it educational, especially when it comes to articles belonging to the world news section. It is comprehensive yet not at the level of writing style that the Daily Mail uses. Also, I am socialist so most of the views expressed in this paper line up with mine.

I suppose you'd rather read The Sun whilst you put on your white vest and beat your wife over a couple of cans of Stella, eh? Bloody immigrants. Bloody nambi pambies liberals. LABOUR'S LOST IT.
The Independent, although The Gaurdian (sic) does have Charlie Brooker but it's frequent baseless Oxbridge bashing gets on my nerves.
