Publications for Postgraduate Studies

I don't have any publications. I did two projects during my undergrad but that was a year and half back. Do you think this will be possible to publish if I manage to find my Professor ?

Do I have mention any results in the Publications and moreover how do I make a publication ? Which journal should I contact and what are the steps ?

Generally speaking the work done in the vast majority of undergraduate science and engineering projects would be insufficient on its own to be publishable (at least not in a journal which is worth the effort) and the work needs extending. Your project supervisor is best placed to advise really as you do not provide much information here.

The publication process can be pretty stringent (e.g. it has to challenge an existing methodology or extend the forefront of the research in the discipline such as via empirical evidence). It also has to be refereed, then is usually sent back for amendments, then re-submitted etc. The journal article has to conform to the journal's specifications. All journals are different, some are more known than others so it depends.

I never knew of such a thing when I was in undergrad neither did any of my Professors or Dean told me about this. I had done two engineering projects, one in Junior and one in senior and both the times no one mentioned me about publications. I guess its too late to go back and write anything on those projects.

I know for PhD is a necessary requirement but what about Masters ? I haven't started Master's yet so I can prepare for one such publication in the new univerisity.

In the UK you don't even need to publish as a PhD student normally -- your research just needs to be of "publishable quality". It is only in other European countries where it is a formal requirement. Very few Masters students publish anything.

From what I understand publishable works are only really associated at PhD level. Working on a journal article or conference paper can be good practice anyway and can help synthesise the research already carried out. But yeah, it's not really a requirement when doing a PhD. It's part of professional development basically.

I echo everything said above, though I will add that there are several journals specialising in the publication of undergraduate project work. In biology and chemistry, there is Biosciences Horizons. As I understand them, however, the projects are often monitored and guided by your undergraduate supervisor, and so if you are no longer in contact with them then I imagine it would be difficult.

Largely speaking, however, it is not at all a necessity for entrance to a Ph.D, though giving conference papers will (if you recieve research council funding) form an aspect of your professional development and funding requirements. Publications will start to play a role when you begin looking for post-doctoral positions at other universities, so you do have quite some time.
