Vet lab tech (animal science grad) what are my options...any ideas please!?

(Re-posted in a broader category!)

Hi everyone! I'm after a little bit of advice if possible!

I'm currently working as a veterinary lab tech in a mixed practice. I came here straight from university having studied Animal Science and Welfare.

I mostly love it but I'm feeling pretty stale and have probably realised it's time to move on...progression opportunities here feel very limited.

I've learnt so much over the time I’ve been here however, so feel that if I moved to something different I would be wasting all of the stuff I feel I'm pretty good at (!)

As far as I know, progressing into something more specialised in the veterinary laboratory is difficult unless you're a vet (which I’m obviously not!), even finding CPD courses is becoming more difficult as there seems to be a lack of relevant courses available.

I enjoy most parts of my role here but my main interests are cytology and haematology, and general laboratory management.

I’m considering getting into teaching but feel that’s a last resort really.

There is also a lack of commercial labs in my area, plus also I’m not too keen on working in a large lab not attached to a practice as I’ll lose the interaction with the cases and feel I’ll just be pressing buttons all day!

I was also considering doing a part time post grad course, but money is tight. In general relevant jobs seem far and few between for my type of experience.

Basically, I guess I’m asking what options does an animal science grad with 5 years of veterinary practice laboratory experience have?

Am I better off furthering my education (which wouldn’t benefit me salary wise if I stay where I am) or just try and find the right type of job for me.

I also don’t feel as qualified as a lot of other science/lab technicians, so my confidence at competing for jobs is also pretty low.

Feeling very stuck in a rut...argh!!

I would really appreciate some advice to try and help me get focused again.

Thanks in advance!
