I have to do an essay about Gladstone and Ireland. The title is 'My mission is to pacify Irlenad' To what extent did Gladstone succeed?

What particular area are you stuck on? No-one's going to be able to write the entire thing for you, but if you say where you're getting stuck then I'm sure people can help you out :smile:

I'd probably suggest to first evaluate what he meant by "pacify", perhaps discuss briefly British opinions about the Empire etc etc - did he mean to civilise them or to help them.
Perhaps then go on to discuss how he approached the issues of land and church etc, and what effect this had.
Then move on to Home Rule, and whether he actually managed to achieve anything.
Alternatively approach it from social, political and economic sections, bringing it in to the end to see how he realised that he couldn't "pacify" Ireland, and that they needed they're own government to do it.

I hope that's of some help, but really you need to be more specific. And, um, if it's a general thing then as much as I hate to say it - perhaps reread the textbook?
