Mechanics M1 question, help!!!!! :s

I'm quite confused on equations of motion, i thought that since we are using f=ma, we should take the direction of acceleration as positive and therefore the direction of acceleration dictates the largest force (as we are dealing with resultant force).

However q5 (ii) from the january 2011 paper says we should take the direction of motion as the greatest force? http://www.mei.org.uk/files/papers/2011_Jan_m1.pdf very confused - please help?

i was taking the acceleration to still be negative.... rookie error!
