Recommendation for the best animation course in UK?????

I know Bournemouth University has very high reputation of the animation course, but they only do 3D animation. I am more interested in 2D animation (almost Japanese anime style). I would like to learn 3D but I am more preferring 2D.

I am looking at Art University Bournemouth at the moment, it's more focused on drawing and 2D and also learn some CGI (3D?) which is what I want to do, but I think this uni doesn't have high reputation (Correct me I am wrong)

I've also looked into some other unis but they style of the work looks like fine art which is not my type.

So can anyone suggest me any unis which have a high reputation, more focus on 2D (the style of the work is closer to the Japanese anime style) and also teach some 3D?

Thanks

Hello, I am also hoping to do animation. Art University Bournemouth has a great reputation.

I recommend actually going to open days to look at all the different courses though, to see for yourself which you like and would be right for you. Then you can also ask tutors there any questions you have. I've been to a lot of open days, and every course at every university is so different!

Check out Hertfordshire University's animation course too.
They do various animation degrees; 2D, 3D, VFX, and Games Art.

Also, Duncan of Jordanstone, their 2D animation looked good.

It really sounds like you need to ask some tutors loads of questions at open days, and look at the details/structures of courses when on university websites. And check showreels! Compare different university's showreels.

I'm not sure how to advise you on when you talk about "Japanese style", but I will say, when you do your portfolio, definitely make sure you show you have great realistic and observational drawing skills, as well as anything stylised/cartoony. You can teach anyone great things who can draw already, but if all you've ever drawn is Japanese cartoons, it's a bit harder to know if you've got the skills needed to do animation. I hope that I make sense there.

Hope I helped

I asked the reputation because my mum says some employers are care about the reputation of the uni, so I just bit worried about that.

Actually I went to AUB for summer school and I studied a week animation which is very helpful, also I've look through the animation student's sketchbooks and works, there's lots character and background's design, lots figure drawings and observation drawings. But I will go to the open day just in case I may have some new questions:tongue:

I know the uni is looking for very strong life drawing and I believe I can do that:wink:

Just for what I said about the 'Japanese style', if you can google image 'American cartoon' and 'Japanese anime' you will see what I mean.
I am more preferring Japanese style because I am enjoying to draw beautiful characters rather than animals or cartoon. I know it sounds a bit ridiculous and I know the thing about learning is to try different skills, but I just afraid I may get boring and dislike animation if I keep to draw animals in the whole year:redface:

Hello, ah I see. I wasn't sure how much info to give you, so I said lots in case you didn't know.

Yeah I know what Japanese style is like, but I'm still not sure what to say about that as Japanese style is very specialised.

Yeah I know it's very detailed anime and impossible to do in the uni course and I think in the course we normally work as a group which other people may not want to do the Japanese anime style:redface: So i am trying to find the closest one

I just love anime so much and push myself too hard and wants to achieve it.

But thank you anyway:smile:

Bournemouth (as in AUCB) creates very good 2D and 3D animation and has a really good reputation for doing so (particularly in 2D). If you mean Bournemouth NCCA, yes they are a 3D only programme.

You could also look at Hertfordshire, you might enjoy this recent film by one of our 2D students

We teach 2D and 3D animation to all our students in their first year, so you potentially study 2D animation and try 3D out to see if you enjoy it and then switch to 3D if it became your preference. One word of warning about anime though - yes some of it is amazing, but you need to show a variety of styles if you want to actually get a job in 2D animation, a field where you need to adapt to the visual style of each project; and in the UK those can be extremely diverse. Very little anime gets made in Europe (there is one studio in London that does it, but they are not very large) so if you need to find work afterwards you'll need to know this before you start and to try different styles (that doesn't mean Disney-esque work at all, but before you try the often very limited animation of anime, you should attempt the fluid animation of Disney etc so that you can work in all possible areas).
You should look at UCA Farnham they have an amazing animation course which is broad and flexible, it's not well known about but it is amazing and the work is all great. They do more 2D traditional style as well as 3D if that's your preference too

Design for Interaction and Animation at the University of Ulster is an amazing course that is highly competitive but has a flawless reputation! It's quite a new course but the professors are incredible! check it out at least!
