AS AQA Biology ISA -- how to decide on a type of graph?

I read in the specification that you have to know how to plot data as line graphs, bar charts, histograms and scatter diagrams, but how can you decide which of these is the "appropriate" graph for a particular set of data? Do they look for a particular type of graph each time, or can you get marks for using any of those mentioned, so long as it's plotted correctly? Any tips would be welcome -- thanks.

(I hope this isn't against the rules, since I'm not asking about any particular ISA but about the graph skill in general, but sorry and please remove if it is and I missed it...)
