Hi, I'm starting at Downing College in a few weeks time and I was wondering if you have any ideas as to what I need to take eg. kitchen/ bedroom etc. I don't know yet if my room is ensuite and i am on H staircase Main Court. Thanks for any help!!

Have a look at this list but use it as a guide of things to think about; you do not need to take everything on there! You may also need some kind of smart clothing for matriculation; the college should let you know in advance what the dress code is.
I have come up with quite a novel idea.

I am taking EVERYTHING. If it is too much and I can bear to let them go (old books, crap clothes, outmoded computer stuff) then I will. Never been a fan of hip minimalism.

Thought i would start this thread so people who have heard about their accommodation could find their neighbours and such (or at least people who are in the same college).
I'm in 29 Howard Court in Downing College

That was my room last year

SERIOUS!!!

I haven't got into Downing yet and am applying next year. That was the room I looked at that convinced me to apply to Downing as it was part of our tour. Enjoy the samsung HDTV and the soft bed!

Unfortunately the TVs are covered and locked during student rental periods, though there are certain ways around this......

Hey! I was in H9 last year, so I can help answer any questions you might have. If you're in rooms 3, 4, 8 or 9, then you'll have an en-suite. The kitchen facilities are supposed to have changed (improved!) for this year, so I don't know how accurate my info will be.

That's my room!! I'm surprised it's en- suite as I asked for a lower band room (hope the rent isn't too high :frown: )
What size is the room? Is there a wardrobe/drawers? Is the desk small/large? Do I need a table light/multi plug extension? Are the floors wooden /carpeted? Will I need bedroom rug/bathroom rug/pedestal mat?
I think you will be hearing a lot from me in the next week:smile:
Actually went to Downing yesterday but wasn't able to see my room as it was locked and workmen were everywhere. The kitchen was still being fitted but it did have an oven - not sure about freezer. There was a kettle in the kitchen but it might have been the builders.
Can't wait to move on.

Yes, it has a double bed, built in lit wardrobe, large desk, chest of drawers, arm chair, desk chair etc. The en-suite has a bath and shower which as of Easter term last year actually works. I'll pm you some pics if you like.

Ah awesome! Yeah, I asked for a lower band room and got plumped with this one too. You should get a housing contract through soon, but I think that room will be £107/week this year.

The room is big! It's listed as being 19.40m2, so bigger than most, although it's a weird shape.

There is a small bedside table with one drawer and some open space below, there's a tall, narrow bookshelf, a desk with 3 drawers, a chest of drawers with 4 good size drawers, and a standard size wardrobe.

The desk pretty huge, so don't worry about working space. They provide a desk lamp, but you might want another one for beside the bed if you like to read there. A multi-plug extension is always a good idea, but I think I coped without. There's 4 sockets IIRC.

The floors are carpeted, but it's obviously not the nicest carpet around, so a rug would make it cosier. A small bath mat is a good idea to put in front of the shower, but it's only a very small en-suite, so there's not much space for anything bigger.

You get an oven! Massively jealous. They provide a kettle I think, but people tend to take their ones up too, because they're always being used. There were two microwaves and a hot plate for us last year, although if you're getting an oven unit, you might have a proper hob now.

I think I might have some pictures, so I'll PM you soon. Any more questions, just ask!

Hey,

Anybody got an invitation for interview yet? If not anyone know when the invites are coming through?

I've got a few mates who've got interviews but for other colleges...
So far Downing haven't sent out interviews, but I would imagine they're coming soon. All interview invites etc are done by the college, so don't worry that other people have heard back.

Oh, and congratulations for picking the best course at the best college :p:

That depends on whether he/she wants to specialise in chemistry...

But yes, definitely the best college.

Bah, I must confess I'm still doing physics, but I do it in the chemistry department.

It is across the road, after all...

I love how ridiculously close everything is to Downing (well, except the Cavendish :frown:) and I'll be heading across to Chemistry in an hour and a half... just after that lovely 9am Maths lecture
