What is wrong with the UK education system?

Discuss

Personally think its to do with the one size fits all stance, exams are tailored towards a certain mindset which isnt right...some individuals are therefore unable to cope with these exams e.g. stop students respond better to exams related to the real world...

But there are lots of subjects that are coursework based
I did some maths yesterday.

I go to school for roughly 6.5 hours a day (from 9 till half 3 was what I used as the calculation, in reality it's like 8:50 until 3:45pm but egh effort)
On reading a nice page in my 6th Form Planner™ the recommendation is that one is supposed to do 5 hours of work at home per subject per week.

6.5*5 for 5 days +20 for the 5 hours for each of my four AS levels.

It comes to 52.5 hours, unless somebody can spot a balls up here somewhere.

1. OverviewYou can’t work more than 48 hours a week on average - normally averaged over 17 weeks. This law is sometimes called the ‘working time directive’ or ‘working time regulations’.-maximum weekly working hours on uk gov website (https://www.gov.uk/maximum-weekly-working-hours/overview)

Well that's funny.

The first thing I would scrap, is the different examination boards
I will introduce exams written by a central government agency
I think it falls behind the American system in that extracurricular activities are promoted (relatively) far less
Get rid of the different exam boards, get rid of the higher and lower tiers (everyone should do about higher level), set up more grammar schools and encourage their attitudes.

The main issue with the UK educational system is that, when paired with the budget cuts enforced by the government, exploration and expression of a student's self is limited greatly. Whether it is strict regimes on what they are allowed to wear, how they are allowed to conduct themselves or the subjects available to them. Many high schools and colleges specialise in certain areas of education (My current sixth form/college is specialised in ICT and Technologies), therefore they put a limit on the kinds of courses they offer. In an applied sense, there has been mass cuts to the creative subjects, such as the expressive and performing arts.

Another issue is the method of examination. Of course, it's fine for some people because they're well suited to their educational needs and intellectual capabilities but for those who it doesn't consider, their educational success is hindered by an exam as opposed to being able to do what is best suited to them. An example is how females tend to be (Statistics have shown) better than males at sitting written exams and coursework. However, males tend to find practical assessment (Artistic painting, construction and other practical means) better than sitting exams or completing coursework. Your general functionalist approach claims that the educational system is based on meritocracy - Everyone having an equal opportunity. This isn't the case as students are streamed and setted based on class, gender and ethnicity. Even in today's society, teachers are secretly racist. If every child was entitled to the same rights within school, they were given a more promoting environment and were socialised to have a more educationally promising childhood, every student would be able to do substantially better within schools and are therefore more likely to find a better job or have a more promising future.

To summarise:
- Inadequate socialisation
- Pressure to conform and fit into peer groups
- Lack of educational stimulation within and outside of schools
- Lack of available options for students to explore what they want to do
- A defective examination method, baised toward female success
- Lack of self expression

Gradual reform to the education system is required, and soon, in order for a large improvement in the general success of students and institutions as a whole.
It's too lenient on the students. Students can basically do anything they want and never get the correct punishment, this includes swearing to the teacher. Just appealing. They also have millions of different qualifications for students to take, which is not right as it creates segregation among students. They should just stick to A levels and GCSEs.
In school kids are often spoon fed information without giving them the opportunity to problem solve.
And also in my days school was pretty boring, there was nothing there to get the kids excited. I don't know how that is changed now, but in school children should learn more about real world stuff. Scrap all the BTECs, concentrate on the core subjects English , Maths and science.
There's no point in doing a BTEC in Hairdressing that can be taken later in college.

OCR is what's wrong with it!
I'm incredibly surprised at the lack of diversity in the social education system, leaving school the only thing I learned was to always use a condom (not helpful lol) and that drugs were bad, nothing about taxes, mortgages and very little on healthy relationships. Obviously the academic part is a big part of a school's requirements for its pupils as it should be but part of this time at school is allowing every single pupil to leave the school at least fairly educated in every aspect of adult life.
Why would you scrap the different examining bodies?

The rest of it could be improved greatly, but years 7-11 are the worst part.
