The main issue with the UK educational system is that, when paired with the budget cuts enforced by the government, exploration and expression of a student's self is limited greatly. Whether it is strict regimes on what they are allowed to wear, how they are allowed to conduct themselves or the subjects available to them. Many high schools and colleges specialise in certain areas of education (My current sixth form/college is specialised in ICT and Technologies), therefore they put a limit on the kinds of courses they offer. In an applied sense, there has been mass cuts to the creative subjects, such as the expressive and performing arts.
Another issue is the method of examination. Of course, it's fine for some people because they're well suited to their educational needs and intellectual capabilities but for those who it doesn't consider, their educational success is hindered by an exam as opposed to being able to do what is best suited to them. An example is how females tend to be (Statistics have shown) better than males at sitting written exams and coursework. However, males tend to find practical assessment (Artistic painting, construction and other practical means) better than sitting exams or completing coursework. Your general functionalist approach claims that the educational system is based on meritocracy - Everyone having an equal opportunity. This isn't the case as students are streamed and setted based on class, gender and ethnicity. Even in today's society, teachers are secretly racist. If every child was entitled to the same rights within school, they were given a more promoting environment and were socialised to have a more educationally promising childhood, every student would be able to do substantially better within schools and are therefore more likely to find a better job or have a more promising future.
To summarise:
- Inadequate socialisation
- Pressure to conform and fit into peer groups
- Lack of educational stimulation within and outside of schools
- Lack of available options for students to explore what they want to do
- A defective examination method, baised toward female success
- Lack of self expression
Gradual reform to the education system is required, and soon, in order for a large improvement in the general success of students and institutions as a whole.
