Difference between applied and normal degrees

I'm in Year 12 at the moment and I'm currently looking at degrees.

I've found one course that looks interesting and covers a range of topics that I enjoy, however it is an applied degree.
Please could somebody explain the difference between a normal degree and an applied degree and whether a normal or applied degree looks better as I don't want to waste so much money and time on something that won't look particularly great :smile:
