Best unis for AI?

I'm interested in studying CS in uni with a particular interest in AI and machine learning. I'd just like to know what are the best unis for this?

Hi!

Best is a difficult question. I'd say have a look at University League tables to help you out:
- https://www.theguardian.com/education/ng-interactive/2022/sep/24/the-guardian-university-guide-2023-the-rankings
I would also look at it as is and then filter by Computer Science so you get a good idea of how it performs overall and for your specific subject area.

But I went through this struggle a year ago too so I get how overwhelming it is. You have many options for what type of AI degree you are look for as well. Some universities (not a lot though) do have just plain Artificial Intelligence degrees while most others have Computer science & AI or Computer Science (AI). The third one is what I'm currently doing. Unis vary but normally with an Computer Science & AI it's more of a 50/50 split between the two where with Computer Science (AI) it's a computer science course with a specialism in AI near the end.

There's pros and cons for all of these. I like the Computer Science (AI) as I feel it gives you a little more wiggle room if you suddenly decide later on that you would prefer to work in a different area of Computer Science later on whilst still giving you that edge ahead in AI for the field if you do decide to go that route.

Another thing you could do is do a plain bachelors in Computer Science and then do a Masters in AI or Machine Learning either straight after or a little later on.

I've focused quite a lot of AI their as that's what I'm doing so I'm a tad biased but if you like the look of machine learning maybe also take a look at Robotics degrees they're a little different but normally let you do AI and machine learning but instead of just computer science along side you do a bit more Engineering.

Basically for any degree look into the syllabus and see if it excites you or not.

But overall while the course is important, I'd say liking the feel and location of the uni is almost as important and I would put that above a decision between Computer Science & AI vs Computer Science (AI).

Sorry that was a whole lot of writing. I hope that makes sense and feel free to ask any further question about looking for unis or if you have any questions about Heriot (my personal best Uni for Comp Sci) I'd be happy to answer those as well.
