Yeah, mass produced food is a process industry and chemical engineers are involved in it.
source: Dad's a chemical engineer who worked for companies manufacturing equipment for food production lines.
I expect it'd make a change from reading PS's from students who are obsessed with oil industry $$$ because they saw some dodgy salary survey.
The food industry, and more general formulation engineering, is a huge area for chemical engineers - this can range from food, to cosmetics and toiletries (e.g. toothpaste). As @Joinedup said, it'd definitely make a more interesting personal statement than most probably, and is very relevant both from an industry perspective and a theoretical perspective.
The need to consider how to efficiently create this "bubble" structure, and how different methods may be more or less efficient or produce higher or lower quality results, based on qualitative preferences by consumers...it really offers things to talk about from notepad to bench to factory to shelf, and all the logistics connecting those, depending on the angle chosen.
Somewhere you may be interested in applying to, Birmingham has specific research activities in the area of food science and formulation engineering relating to their chemical engineering department. If this is an area of interest you could pursue it further here for certain - and even if not, the admissions tutors may be encouraged to see something relevant to their broader research interests as well.
