Am I white?

Ok silly question I know, but I've been kind of confused lately in where I stand.

You know when people are like 'white people are this' and 'white people are that' - I legit cannot relate to any of that, because although my skin colour is white - in my culture, we aren't like that at all?

I'm from Cyprus by the way. Which geographically is in the Near/Middle East - but culturally (and politically(?)) is in Europe. I feel like if Cyprus was a Muslim country, it would be classed as Middle Eastern and non-white, but because it's an orthodox christian country, we're white?

I googled it once and someone took a picture of an old cypriot man and said 'does this animal look white to you?' which lmao I thought was funny but it just confused me even more???

Anyway, I just wanted to know what you guys thought, what defines white and what doesn't? - It doesn't make a difference either way. It's just that I feel like I'm in the middle? Like I can't relate to the 'white people' jokes and I can't relate to majority of POC issues/jokes/etc.

No you're not. I see white to mean pure British White. White people jokes only really apply to the pure white like American or British. You're from a country with a quite different culture so those jokes definitely don't apply to you. A bit like how North Africans like Algerians may not call them Africans and instead Arab or something, even though they're technically from Africa, with different cultures (though Africa as a whole already has many different cultures).

You're white if you have white skin. :colonhash:

I have the same skin tone as many Arabs/Middle Easterners but I've never seen them being classed as white? Just curious as to what is classed as white and what isn't. Bit ambiguous imo!

This makes no sense and is totally false. When the poster said "white" they meant someone if European descent. People with a white skin tone span across all major ethnic groups and races.

That's interesting - I assumed that too - but a lot of my black/asian friends would always make jokes about white people and look at me (lol :rolleyes: I know).

I'm of European descent so I am white or because my skin isn't white white, I'm not?
If the majority of your DNA (>90%) stems from the European continent, then in that sense, your technically white or Caucasian by race. Alot of people are 'white passing'. Meaning they're may of mixed race but their Caucasian features are more pronounced and are then generally seen as "white" by the masses.

Yeah that's weird, I guess maybe you have no pure white British friends so you're the closest to white there is lol. A similar situation in my school, I got Portuguese and Italian friends and weirdly when people make white people jokes they look at them, even though they have different cultures to the typical white American or British.
Before your explanation I would have said you were white
Now I'm not sure!
Spaniards, Italians and Greeks etc have olive skin and are white so I'd guess you are too
(If you want to be!!)
Colour is irrelevant. We are all human and that is all that matters.

Where in Europe? I wouldn't consider the Spanish for example to be 'white'. White to me is UK, US, Canada, Ireland, Scandinavia, Finland, Russia etc.

Yeah I've never had a white british friend haha but lots of arab friends - I feel like culture wise we're very similar, it's just religion/language that's different between Cypriots & Arabs. That's why I'm having a bit of an identity crisis?
Yes you're white. Both your parents are of European descent, like you mentioned. However not all white folks have the same skin tone. It varies just like every other race. Have you ever noticed that southern Europeans like Italians are darker compared to those in Scandinavia or Eastern Europe.

European continent by political definitions or geographical? Because if you look at the location of Cyprus, it's closer to Syria and Turkey than it is to Europe. I also think (don't want to admit) but a lot of Turkish/Greek cypriot mixing went on centuries ago in Cyprus too when both lived together in peace - not to mention the amount of times Cyprus got taken over by different empires - mixing must have went on there too no?

If I were Greek from Greece, the answer would be easy: white. But Cyprus is a little more complicated because of its location/history.
White person stereotypes pretty much only apply to white brits/americans. Like how stereotypes about black people tend to apply to either africans or african-americans, and not really both.

If you appeared in a porn they might call you a latina/latino I suppose? Don't really have a good answer for your predicament. Doesn't matter in the end really tho.

Cyprus - I mentioned it in the original post
If you have European descent, you're white. That's not a bad thing. It does not matter what percentage you are, to sum it up you're European = white.
