Gap Year, I'm confused?

So I'm taking a gap year. I have some questions because I am VERY confused. I want to gain work experience, volunteer etc during my gap year and then re-apply after it, but when exactly would I reapply? Lets say I get my results and start the gap year summer 2019, would I have to re-apply in September 2019, or September 2020? I'm completely baffled, please help! When do I re-apply during a gap year?

You apply at the end of this year. Any point from September 2018 till January 2019. And you’ll be applying to go to university in September 2019
