That's not the problem - the thing I find crazy is that there IS no centralised booking system for Europe's intercity/inter-nation trains. You have to book through a third party :/ Really annoying.

Oh I had this problem when I was booking European trains once, it was an utter nightmare.

What makes matters worse is that they made our booking wrong and I had to write to claim a refund - this was next to impossible, the addresses were obscure, with no avenue for complaint, and needless to say we never got anything back. :frown:

2 large guys in ill-fitting suits grabbed an arm each...

You're not far off :p:
Does it matter that my DoS will be on leave this year? What is the difference between an internal DoS and an external one?

Nope, it's pretty standard for a DoS to go on leave at some point during your degree. Mine was away for a term last year. Unless you have any problems with your work you'll only really see them twice a term for a few minutes anyway ('You're doing well, keep it up, any questions? No? Bye' is basically what happens). An internal DoS is a member of your college, whereas an external is not. So the worst case scenario is that you will have to walk quite far for your start of term/end of term meetings. There are normally DoS drinks in freshers week so not sure what happens with that-- hopefully he'll still put something on for you!

OK so a DoS "on leave" is totally away from Cambridge and has no part in your education for that period? My external one is from Jesus College, so not exactly a massive trek, but I take it from your message that the DoS doesn't supervise? I had assumed the DoS was the person primarily in charge of supervising you.

Well my DoS generally stayed in Cambridge but as he was on leave he didn't have any 'DoS duties'. He did some research, writing, went abroad etc. So you might see him around but not to talk to. How much your DoS supervises you depends on your DoS, basically. You get supervised by the people who are most qualified in given papers. I've been supervised by my DoS every year as he specialises in a paper that was compulsory the first year and that I chose to take last year and this year. He then chose supervisors for my othr papers. As your DoS is on leave, he won't be supervising you this year. You'll get supervisors largely from your college but also from outside it if needs be. Your DoS will probably supervise you when he can, but you'll probably have lots of different supervisors. I have one per paper, so 4 a year.

Thanks

I've realised that Clare will have a grand total of 0 SPS fellows who aren't on leave (the other tutor is on leave as well) so I'll just have to wait to see what they allocate.

It's more interesting being supervised at other colleges anyway, imo.

I think I only had one supervision in the whole three years actually in my own college, and only a three or four overall by members of the college.

I like it too. My college only has one fellow in my subject, so obviously she only supervises 'her' papers (she took us all in 1st/2nd year for 2 papers, then only people who choose specific papers in 3rd year). Rest of the time we have supervisors from all over the place -- I love the variety, and getting to know people from all over the place. Far preferable (certainly in terms of networking) than having most supervisions in college, imo.
I'm now on my third DoS in as many years. But am hoping to be supervised by Jigglypuff's DoS for my dissertation :teeth:

I never had a dissertation supervisor. The whole process sort of passed me by.... (my own fault for not doing anything proactive to organise one, of course)

Good choice, he's such a good supervisor! And he's hilarious.
6000th post.

Yeah, I really hope he agrees to it!
Wow, what a lot to catch up on!

Just got back from a week in Devon visiting the boy. Am thoroughly exhausted from doing nothing except sit on a train all day.

I got a job!! I'm going to be testing water systems in schools and stuff for legionnaires disease. I get a company car and everything. Rather excited.

Well done Visesh!

Re Hadrian's Wall, I don't think I could get a week off work so soon, and I'm not sure if the idea of a week long hike appeals, but if you're in the Cumbria stretch on the weekend, I might be able to join you for a day somehow.

In other news: I HATE THE EUROPEAN RAIL SYSTEM (or rather, the lack thereof). I thought booking trains in this country was hard....

Ugh, I know  I came close to giving up last summer when I was trying to get from the French Alps to family in Geneva :s-smilie: Booking flights on local carriers wasn't much more fun..

It depends. I'm in a similar boat to you, mainly because Peterhouse has no SPS fellows. I have an external DoS from Christs. She supervised me for Psychology last year, and remains my DoS for Pt IIa but won't supervise me any longer as I'm going into Sociology.

And congrats on the job, Jo :five:

Yeah, it's been very hard work. And I'm still not sure I can even use my interrail pass on some of the local railways in Switzerland....will just have to ask at the time.

But anyway I did get it mostly sorted. Off travelling for a week tomorrow morning
