Choosing A-Levels

Just some context; I am a 16 yo looking to work in Computing in some form (e.g software engineering, game development, website design, etc.) I have chosen to study Computer Science A-Level and IT BTEC Diploma at college.

My issue is that for a lot of software engineering and computer science degrees, you need an a-level in Maths. I am quite good at maths (predicted a level 8 or A at GCSE) but I don’t like the subject in the slightest! I chose IT because the course contains everything I am interested in leaning including animation, game and web development, and computer systems. But everyone is telling me to choose Maths because in the long run it will be more beneficial for getting a uni degree and a job. Also, taking IT means I am specialising too soon?

Any advice on this would be great. I really want to do IT, not maths but I am worried about compromising my future?

Maths is most definitely the better option.
Hi there,

It might help to research into some of the careers you have mentioned by using our job profiles-
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/

You could also look at university course entry requirements and course content to understand how maths and IT are related to those degrees as this might help you decide which is best. Another way to find out which is best is to speak to universities direct to ask them what subject they would like applicants to have when applying for their degrees. You can find out course information and university contact details here- https://www.ucas.com/

I hope this helps you and understand what the right choice is for you. We also have our advisers available on webchat if you would like some further guidance- https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/webchat/chat/

If there's anything else that we can help with please let us know.

Thanks-Samrita.

I think you answered your own question - you will have a much better choice of computer science degrees at good unis if you pick A level Maths. You are good at the subject so it sounds like a no brainer to me that you should pick it, even if you don't particularly enjoy it. After all, it's only for 2 years and you don't want to be held back from applying to the best unis because you chose the wrong A level subject.
