Graphic design A levels

I’m wanting to do graphic design at university, yet don’t know what A levels I should choose. Does anyone have any advice ?

Hi @Akachan

If you're thinking of a design subject then I'd suggest a mixture of A Levels. I now study Fashion Design at BCU and I chose Art, Drama, History and German for my A Levels. I'd suggest choosing an art based subject. I was in a similar situation to you and I chose Fine Art, although I knew I wanted to choose design. Studying Fine Art still helped me progress onto university as I had a broad portfolio of artwork.

Maybe you could consider a subject like Media if your sixth form/college offer it? Although it's not graphic design, it may have some focus on similar areas like promotion or digital work that you might find useful.

But I'd always suggest choosing subjects you think you'll enjoy. Keep your subjects diverse so you don't get overwhelmed by studying all art and design subjects, or all academic subjects, but any should help you progress onto university.

Hope this helps,

I'd suggest doing one or two creative subjects, then one other. Some kind of design subject is the priority. Some colleges have specialist graphic design A Levels, or will have someone who knows about graphics teaching more general creative subjects - so check what options are available to you locally. Choose a college (and teacher) that you can learn most from. Art is an option, but not a necessity. Computing isn't really that relevant.

To be a good graphic designer, you need a broad range of knowledge so pick a subject that isn't directly related to design but something you find interesting and will enjoy. History, maths, media - it doesn't matter.
