However a typical answer to a question requiring discussion on doctrine of precedent include:
1) doctrine of stare decisis meaning and the importance of the concept.
2) justifications for the doctrine's existence I.e. consistency, clarity etc.
3) the development by the case of Bristol Aeroplane and exceptions. Discuss the exceptions in Bristol Aeroplane and the extent to which they affect or depart from the doctrine and whether they are contrary to the doctrine
4) extension of the principle in Bristol Aeroplane in criminal cases where the liberty of the defendant is also a factor to consider
