I have combined the Manchester entries into one as:
i)none of the other unis that offer both Ba and BSc courses have 2 entries
ii)the average tariff sort criterea is only known at the overall economics subject level not at the course level.

The main entry is BA as:
i)The Manchester L100 course is BA
ii)A lot more BA than BSc students at Manchester for economics.

Hey Paul, after contacting many many Unis ( yes I don't have a social life right now thanks to AQA/OCR and EdExcel) As of 2010 Loughborough and QMUL will be AAB and City ABB, can confirm this as I have their prospectus' in front of me and have rang up

Don't you think they're playing with fire here, as from your taelt, they accept people lower than their needed requirements which were ABB and BBB?

Well they may:
i) be quoting higher typical offers in attempt to appear to be a more competitive and hence attractive course.
ii)be flexible in what offers they actually offer. e.g. currently Loughborough demand 320 points but required on 200 from A-levels so they are not even proper ABB at the moment.

Also latest TAELT data is for 06/07 year. By the time I produce TAELT 2010 will have the 07/08 data. And is possible that 07/08 year applications were stronger. But:
i)QM and City both in Extra this year
ii)Loughbourough tariffs were worse in 06/07 than in 05/06 e.g. 12% more students had below 360 points.

I don't think much of applying for variant courses in general:

I want to hedge my bets and apply for some variant courses.
I can understand why you want to hedge. But:
i) In order to be suitable for the variant subject you risk compromising the PS and not getting in the places you do apply for economics at. There are some exceptions for example Maths and Economics at Warwick, which gives out the same standard offer to all applicants whatever your PS.

ii) You risk end up with a course you not want to do and 3 years is a long time to spend on a course your heart is not really in.

iii) Doing multi applications for one uni is not great. Remember admissions tutors will know about other applications at same uni. So may end up looking like you are more interested in the uni than the course.

iv) Variant courses may be harder not easier to get into. 2 examples:
a) At Warwick in 2005 for straight economics there were 1185 applications and 104 entrants. (11:1), whilst with Industrial economic there were 116 applications and 5 entrants. (23:1). So the variants has twice the applicants per place of the straight course.
b) At LSE Straight in 2007 econ is 2,861:236 (about 12:1), Econ with Econ history is 123:5 (about 24:1) and BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics is 282:8 (about 35:1):

v)At uni it is a lot easier to transfer from a general course (e.g. straight econ) to a specialist course (e.g. Industrial Econ) than the other way round. This is because straight econ will (generally) involve the teaching of more econ (e.g. twice as much at Warwick) . and you can't easily pick up that large an amount of knowledge

Further in the case of Warwick variant courses I expect them to have the same offer as straight economics soon. So there will be no advantage then anyway.

Otherwise, in general, A/AS-Level Maths is preferred at grade B.

Yeah, I'd assume it's for 2010. Liverpool don't differentiate on their website, but that said, I remember in their prospectus for 2009 it was BBB irrespective.

I'm simply checking out of interest/for fun. No real reason. :smile:

I'm definitely going to Southampton in September.

I have added in (C) flag for unis that were in clearing in 2008.

Why are some universities followed by (C)?
The (C) means that the uni was in clearing for straight economics in 2008 for UK/EU students

Also I have added in a couple of Hyperlinks:

I have updated TAELT. The Lancaster change is for 2010 and it will be interesting to find out if Lancaster require A-level or only AS-level Maths. With Exeter if it is a 2009 change then it is their 2nd change this year, e.g. they were AAB/ABB back in July.

Hi next year I'm taking a gap year and applying for economics at Manchester bsc, Bham, Newcastle and Sheffield. I am currently in my first year of maths at Manchester but dislike the course massively but I should finish the year with a 2:1 average. My alevel grades were AAC in Maths, further maths and Physics and at AS level french-B and chemistry -c what do you think my chances are of getting in with a good personal statement?

I have updated the QM offer from BBB to AAB with maths required. Though given they were in clearing last year and in extra this year raising their offer might be a bit optimistic.

Also I have corrected the mistake of having Queen's Belfast instead of QM in clearing for 2008.

I have not thought about it much yet. But AAB.2.1 (not ABB.2.1) would seem likely.
