Hiya, I'm planning on having a full sexual health checkup (I'm female) - can anyone tell me what I can expect examination-wise? How long can I expect all the tests to take?
Thanks in advance!

Your employer has to give you time off for medical appointments, and even if you couldn't find an appointment outside of working hours, it shouldnt mean you taking a whole day off, just starting your shift a bit later or finishing a bit earlier or perhaps having an extended lunch.

It depends on the surgery really, you should in theory be able to speak to them over the phone (ask to speak to the person who does smear tests or have them ring back)

When you call up, you will have to say you need an appointment for a smear so the appointment is made with the right person. I know it might seem embarrasing, but this is a standard procedure which I'm sure they have appointments for every day, the receptionist won't bat an eyelid at you calling for this.

If you were going to take valium or something you'd need yet another appointment with a doctor who would have to approve and prescribe it... It might not work and it will mean you have more time to worry more about it. its probably best to just get it over and done with. A double appointment or talking to the nurse over the phone before the smear appointment would probably be a good idea. (though seeing a doctor might be a good idea if you always have pain during sex so the cause can be found and treated)

Hi! I know this was ages ago but I just wanted to say I managed to brave the test a few months ago. Thanks for the encouragement! It wasn't bad at all and they actually found advanced pre-cancerous cells which I've had treatment to remove... If I never went I would probably have developed cancer in my 30s. So just thanks for your advice really. And to any other women reading - just go! If I can do it anyone can!

It depends - I've had checks where I've been internally examined using a speculum (and the nurse has a feel around inside!) and then swabs taken from just inside the vagina/just inside the cervix, but I've also had ones where they just send you to the toilet with a swab stick yourself and you do your own swab (I've not had sex with a bazillion people to have so many tests, I'm just paranoid haha!). You'll also need to pee in a cup (so don't go for a wee a couple of hours before) to check for gonorrhea and chlamydia and they'll take some bloods from your arm (you might have to ask for this) for HIV, hep C, and syphilis. The whole appointment will probably take about an hour, and include the nurse talking to you about contraception, any sexual health issues you've been having etc, and taking a history. Results should be texted back to you in 2 weeks. Depending on the nurse (some can be heavy-handed - eg. My first smear was totally easy and pain-free thanks to an excellent nurse, but my first STI test left me bleeding and in agony!) it either won't hurt at all, will be a tiny bit uncomfortable, or will hurt quite a bit, but if the nurse is gentle and experienced it'll be painless. If you have to do the swab yourself, be very careful to only insert it as just as far as necessary, and do it really slowly and gently.
In year 8 all the girls in my school had 3 vaccinations for cervical cancer, does this mean I'm pretty much protected against cervical cancer? Im not entirely sure what the vaccination was for, and whether it has lasting effects.. does anyone know? Im 19 and had sex with 2 people.
This might be a stupid question,b but if you are in a monogamous relationship, HPV is basically an STD so there isn't a constant risk of getting it if you are only having sex with each other and neither of you have it? it doesn't just develop in the body randomly? sorry if that doesnt make sense xD
Right. Had protected sex with a prostitute on holiday 2 weeks ago, stupidly. protected vaginal sex and protected oral.

the sexual adviser i saw said i was fine and no need to worry.

today my balls are quite red ... the scrotum is red on both sides.

to worry or not to worry? google brings up whole range of things but i don't want to 'research' too much.

well i got checked out with a full blood test and urine test and it came back fine.
Hi everyone, I am going for my first sexual health screening at my uni clinic, I don't have any symptoms so will they test for everything including herpes if I don't have any sores? Or will I need to ask them specifically to test my blood for herpes? I don't think I do have it but would rather get checked for everything possible just in case. Thanks.
I completely agree with thread starter Fleur de lis
Hi there all,

It is understandable to have worries and queries around any intimate examination and hopefully your doctor is open to discussion about these issues.
Taking through worries is often the main way to work too a resolution.
Expectations will vary depending on the type of check up or examination you require, feel free to message me for information.

Hi, DrExplore
It was very kind of you. I'm very care of sexual health. In STIs topic, can you give me some datsa (PDF, slide, details,...) about them.
I'm seriously studying about sexual health
Thank you very much!
Hi

You're welcome. Which kind of data are you interested in?

Had an examination recently?

Take care

Johnny
You would have specifically ask for your blood to screened for herpes.

Chlamydia

I have chlamydia and am 8 days into a 10 day long prescription. However I am still getting the greeny-yellow discharge :/ I am going to go get another test the day that I stop the treatment, but is there any glimmer of hope that this is normal? I know that the antibiotics make the urine green. Can it do the same to discharge?

Does anyone have experience of chlamydia not going away immediately?

The story behind my chlamydia is also really horrible. I feel so unlucky. I have actually only slept with one person in my life (I'm 21). But my ex boyfriend (2 year relationship) cheated on me, continued to have unprotected sex with me, and about two months later (we were already broken up) decided to finally tell me that he cheated and he gave me chlamydia. What's worse was that because I was abroad it took another month before I was able to get treatment. So I have had untreated chlamydia since mid December and I'm guessing that's why its not going away now :frown: This experience puts me off sexual relationships. I feel like the worst thing is that I can't even tell my friends what he did to make me hate him so much, due to the stigma around STDs. I don't really want them to know.

I have also been experiencing bad pain in my hip joint since getting this. It hurts every time I walk and feels like its almost dislocated, but I can't click it back in. - is that related? Right now I'm so worried that the untreated chlamydia turned into PID or something. But I know I should really get off TSR and go see a doctor :/

Finally, does anyone know if there is a way to know if untreated chlamydia has made you infertile?

I'm a bag of worries.
Hey hun, I had chlamydia in october for a total of 5 weeks, my symptoms disappeared a few days after treatment in terms of burning and discharge, but I had pelvic pain for a couple of weeks after. I think I have been reinfected by the same guy who happens to be a compulsive liar, but didn't notice symptoms until a couple of weeks ago, waiting for the results at the moment. If I have it again, I would've had it for a total of 3 months, so obviously damage is a concern but I'm sure it will be fine. Talk about your concerns at your appointment.I'm sure there is no damage you haven't had it for very long at all in comparison to some people, and most importantly you're getting it treated! symptoms can definitely linger for a couple of weeks so try not to worry. In terms of the stigma, I totally understand, as it happens I had a friend who had gonnorhea a couple of weeks before me so I was able to talk to her! I am trying to change my friends views of the stigma because at the end of the day it's just an infection like any other, so try not to worry! hope everything works out okay xxx

Hi guys, need some help pretty urgently from any males.

About 4 weeks ago I woke up one morning with some yellowy discharge sitting on top of the penis. The next day it got really bad and was leaking with the stuff and when I peed it stung like crazy. Got an emergency doc appointment that night and was given a couple of pills to help before I booked in with a gum clinic a couple of days later. The discharge stopped the next day.

I went to the gum clinic about 4 days after and got tested for chlaymydia and gonorrhoea aswell as hiv and syphillis. Was given doxycycline for a week long course. This was exactly 3 weeks ago today by the way.

Since then I have had no discharge but the tip of my penis is swolen and red. Quite sore tbh. No pain in urination but I have to wait a good 2 minutes everytime I go to the loo for the urine to come out even if I'm desperate. Got my test results today and all came back negative so what could it be?

I should add that I'm a 21 year old male who's only ever had oral sex once and this was just before new year. Any guys out there with similiar symptoms that have this or have had in the past? Its seriously effecting me

Cheers
I was wondering why the chlamydia screening programme for 16-24 year olds only screens for chlamydia in most places, especially at universities when other infection such as Gonnorhea are common too? At my uni they screen for chlamydia only, however at my sisters she got a home kit that screened for both. Why is this?
sticky thread, as it very much were
It is worrying that young people do not receive adequate information to not take wrong decisions. The widespread bad focused on the topic of sexuality that exists and because of the wide variety of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies, loss of values in our society, the great diversity of views regarding sexuality. To learn to know our sexuality would be important supporting material such as photographs of diseases, videos or movies on sex (no pornography) on the Internet you can find a lot of material http://kidshealth.org/en/teens for example, http://www.seriespepino.com/nymphomaniac-ii/ a film about health disorders such as bipolar disorder can result in hypersexuality, and alcohol and some addictive substances can affect sexual behavior in some people. That kind of information is very important and there is a lot internet.
