Balancing redox reactions is an art, but there are simple rules that take away the mystery.
In acidic conditions
1. Write out the half equations and balance them using only hydrogen ions, water and electrons
2. Multiply the half-equations by judicious numbers to equalize the electrons in each.
3. Add together and cancel out common terms.

In alkali conditions
1. Write out the half equations and balance them using only hydroxide ions, water and electrons
2. Multiply the half-equations by judicious numbers to equalize the electrons in each.
3. Add together and cancel out common terms.
