see flashcards don't really work for me when it comes to essay based subjects.

agh same and I'm not sure how to revise well. especially with the state of exams/ mini exams being so unclear. My teacher recommend breaking up the content into probable essay questions (this is usually how the chapters are laid out anyway) and making essay plans w/ 3-4 points and 3-4 examples per point and learning the plans.
