Can I choose to solve either X or y in simulatenous equations?

Yeah of course, you solve whichever one is easier

Thanks
I want to solve this simultaneous equation through elimination and I managed to solve for X and Y by finding X value first. I wanted do the equation again and solve by finding out Y but it didn't work for both equations. Can you explain to me why it didn't work?

The simultaneous equation s are:
7x - 5y = 20
8x - 3y = 12
