University of Manchester Aerospace engineering… why such low student satisfaction?

UoM is always known as a very good university, why are so many people unsatisfied with the aerospace course?
Have you looked at discover uni to see the breakdown of which questions scored poorly?
I note that they're getting ready to move into an all new facility - it's possible that the current facilities aren't exactly state of the art and are being allowed to become run down.

It is odd that the satisfaction number is so low when the other numbers, things which you might think would have a big effect on it, are so much higher.

You might want to re-read my question… I am just wondering why people are not happy about the course

Which course?
BEng Aerospace Engineering: 47% overall satisfaction https://discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10007798/254/Full-time/
MEng Aerospace Engineering with a placement year: 91 % satisfaction https://discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10007798/143/Full-time/

If you click into the NSS sections on those links you can see which questions scored lowest and which questions scores higher....which will help you understand why the people who weren't satisfied overall might have answered that.

The numbers actually seem even stranger considering:

MEng Aerospace Engineering without a placement year: 41% https://discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10007798/351/Full-time/
MEng Aerospace Engineering with a placement year: 91% https://discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10007798/143/Full-time/

While I agree a placement year is certainly a boost for the course, a lot of the questions that suddenly jump up in positive student responses between these courses are ones that aren't particularly related to a placement year; so the massive difference in these courses just seems strange to me.

I am sorry to you and the other person if that came across as rude, it was not my intention!

Definitely huge inconsistencies there… the MEng course worst of all has 41% of student satisfaction and it’s mainly related to big questions like the quality of teaching, student voice and lack of “interesting” lessons. I don’t know if this is a minority of people who just have a grudge towards the uni or a red flag. Sheffield not only has more students surveyed but MUCH more positive reviews

Only 10 people were surveyed doing the MEng with placement year, so it could there could be bias. It’s anyone’s guess to if students are happy or not, this has slightly put me off manchester ngl, would rather go to sheffield with a better aerospace department than a “bigger global name” if these reviews are truthful.

These students we surveyed in jan-march 2021. It’s worth talking to a university about low NSS results - it could be that the January lockdown wasn’t well prepared for on that course and it caused a big problem for a single year. Or it could be something more long term (like problems with staffing or lab space).

Speak to them and ask what changes have been made in response to the 2021 NSS results and see if you are happy with their response.
Back it up by contacting the SU society and asking current students about what’s going on.

Yeah definitely worth asking the university what’s up with the low satisfaction and see what they come up with, thanks for the great idea
