If anyone could give me some advice would be appreciated.

I would love to become a fashion designer and eventually set up my own brand. I am constantly debating if I should go to fashion school as I'm coming up to 24 now, I didn't go to fashion school when I was younger as I didn't want to disappoint or find my self jobless but i feel like i am in a worse situation than i would of been if i had of gone. I would love to apply for design jobs but I dont have a degree so I can't and there aren't any local apprenticeships I can apply for.

I have thought about studying a marketing or business related degree but I still unsure if a business degree would be any more employable than a fashion degree.

Everyone has recommended that I do an allied health degree as I will be to go from uni to a job sooner than most graduates and earn more money at the start of my career. I feel like I would be studying the degree more for the money side of things.

I have looked at my options if I don't study fashion design and I constantly find my self trying to figure I can do study a fashion masters if my first degree isn't related.

My alevels are in art and design I have studied business before but I dropped out due to mental health reasons and I have work experience within the field I was considering if I were going to study an allied health degree.
I loved art and design at college I also loved business , I wasn't so keen on my work experience but I've had worse jobs.

I forgot to mention I currently learning to sew, the main degrees which have interested me are fashion design with development at ual , fashion buying with design at dmu , marketing and management with psychology at uni of sussex and I was considering speech and language therapy at uni of essex if I decide to go into the heath profession.

Main interest are fashion and business but it is hard to find a degree which specialises in both and I've found one university which considers non design students to study their fashion ma

Hey,

It's so wonderful that you have dreams of having your own design label and fashion brand. It's never too late to start working on your dream and make it come true.

I understand your hesitation in wanting to pursue a bachelor's in Fashion Design considering the time and cost it entails.
Luckily, there are other options you could consider.

Firstly, I'd love to know if your dream is to design and create garments or is it to start a fashion brand? Sometimes they can be the same but sometimes it can be different and both could require different skills. For example, if you wanted to build yourself as an independent designer and set up your label, Fashion design and garment construction skills are essential. But incase you are only looking to develop a fashion brand, depending on your model you could require entrepreneurial and business skills more. Maybe, that's something to decide on!

Incase, the answer is the first option; your own label then maybe instead of a degree you could consider a short course that could teach you the required skills.

These are some options that you could look at:
Fashion Design Short Courses
Fashion Making and Pattern Cutting Short courses

A short course at UAL could teach you the skills, give access to great tools, faculty and infrastructure and also an opportunity to network with like-minded people.

Incase you are more interesting in building a fashion business, maybe in MA in Entrepreneurship could be something to look into - MA Fashion Entrepreneurship and Innovation. This could prepare you for your business models, funding applications, pitching and overall developing a wonderful business.
Another option could be pursuing an MBA at CSM. It's a wonderful mix of art school and business school and could be interesting to lookup.

I hope this helps, please do reach out with anymore questions.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your struggle. It can be tough to know what to do next when you feel like you've made the wrong choice.

Don't worry about your age, though. When I was studying for my degree, there were people from all age groups in my class. And remember, legendary fashion houses like Alexander McQueen didn't achieve success until their early thirties or later. There's no age limit to learning.

At Arts University Plymouth, we offer two fashion-related degrees. If you're interested in the making side of fashion, you may want to consider our BA (Hons) Fashion Design course (link below). On the other hand, if you're interested in marketing and fashion, you might want to look into our BA (Hons) Fashion Media & Marketing degree (link below). Both programs could be a great fit for you if you're passionate about fashion and looking to work in the industry.

Fashion Design - https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-fashion-design

Fashion Media & Marketing - https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-fashion-media-marketing

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]. Alternatively, you can check us out at our next open day on Saturday, January 13th. We offer up to £80 as a travel bursary for visiting our campus in Plymouth!

Hey,

I think that's very natural and both interests are intertwined.

With your final goal being establishing your own fashion brand, I believe before setting that up you would want to design for established brands. This will not only polish your design skills but also give you a brilliant opportunity to understand how a commercial fashion set up works and what other steps are there apart from designing. I definitely think experience working in other brands and labels is crucial before you start your own. So don't worry about that.

I personally feel you could benefit a lot from a fashion design degree or short course. It'll help you understand the basics, make connections, find opportunities and understand your own design aesthetic.

The graduate showcase for LCF is coming up soon in February and it also be a nice opportunity to see what interests you.

I hope this is helping you. Please don't hesitate in reaching out at all, I'm more than happy to answer any doubts you have.

Thank you . I am very tempted to apply for the fashion design degree but my ideal university to go to would be ual or Kingston but my chances of getting in would be lower than others and if I remember correctly but university's want to see garment creations which I don't have. I would like to do a masters in fashion design however I'm worried that I won't be considered if I do a business based degree first . Its very hard to find a ba which offers both a art based and a broad business based combined degree .

Hey,

I completely understand your confusion.

In my personal opinion, if you want to learn both fashion design and business, I would recommend starting off with learning fashion design first and then learning how to build a business out of it.

Incase you are worried about getting into a course of your choice, I would also recommend applying for a foundation course first and build a base. Foundation Diploma
This will help you ease into the field, gain confidence and might also provide clarity.

If not maybe you can start with a short course first and then apply for a course with a base.

For your second question about wanting to do a fashion design master's after a business degree. yes, it can be tough to get in but I do know people who have this career trajectory. But in such a switch, they mostly chose to do another bachelor's in fashion design instead of a master's degree. A master's degree is very research and concept focused rather than skill focussed. Hence, I feel you might not gain a lot from doing a fashion based degree after a degree in business.

Additionally, I feel if you are at UAL, you will be in an environment with multiple opportunities to learn about business building. There are also multiple opportunities to pitch your business, get funding and support as well.

If you still feel like you want to do a business degree first then Bsc Fashion Management can be a good option to consider.

Having the dream of your own fashion label is lovely but you must also keep in mind that the world runs on collaboration. You will be most successful when you work with others. All fashion brands and businesses are successful because many people with their own expertise work together and make it a success. Don't put the pressure of being an expert of everything yourself. You will always find people along the way who will be your collaborators and partners. UAL, apart from the skills and teaching, is a brilliant place to find like minded people and partnerships.

Overall, I'd say don't be scared. Be confident in your passion and you will succeed. Everybody starts somewhere.

I hope this helps somehow in your decision making and gives you confidence.

Please do reach out for any more questions. I would love to help as much as possible.
