Degree classification query

Hi,
I am a final year student at the University of Westminster. I got an average of 72% in Level 5. However, in Level 6, I am receiving an average of 65% in all the modules. I really wanted a first. Is there still chance for me to get a first or the average of 70% is needed in Level 6 as well?

I am looking forward for your reply.

See "7.2 Award Calculation" in "2022–23 Handbook of Academic Regulations", here.

There are three factors you need to consider:

1. You can't use use a simple average in your calculation. You need to weight the mark for each module by the credits attached to that module.

2. The worst-scoring 20 credits (in either Level 5 or 6) are ignored.

3. Levels 5 and 6 are weighted 1:2 when calculating your overall score.

Only by knowing you per-module scores, and the credits per module, can you work out how likely a First will be.
Okay. So in Level 5, I got (67, 69, 71, 74, 77, 78). These grades were for 6 modules and each module is 20 credits. I know that 1/3 of Level 5 will be considered only to calculate the final grade.

In level 6, for semester 1, I got (62, 64, 69 and each module is 20 credits)
Now, what is the average i need to get in the next three modules to get a First?

Your lowest 20 credits are from the 62 you got in Level 6, so your Level 5 percentage is a simple average of 67, 69, 71, 74, 77 and 78 - i.e 72.667. (The academic regulations talk about the overall score - which they call the "indicator score" - being "rounded to the nearest integer", but say nothing about rounding of the score for each level being rounded.)

We know that we want to hit 69.5 overall (because they round to the nearest integer), so if we let the average of the final three modules be X we have:

1/3*72.667 + 2/3*((64+69+X+X+X)/5) = 69.5
24.222 + 2/3*(64+69+X+X+X) = 69.5
2/3*((64+69+X+X+X)/5) = 45.278
(64+69+X+X+X)/5 = 67.917
64+69+X+X+X = 339.583
X+X+X = 206.583
3X = 206.583
X = 68.861 = 69

We can prove that 69 is the correct number by feeding it into this equation, and seeing if the result rounds to 70 or more:

1/3 * ((67+69+71+74+77+78)/6) + 2/3 * ((64+69+69+69+69) / 5) = 69.556, which rounds to 70.

So, that confirms that you need to average 69 in your last three modules to get a first. (You might want to aim for 70, as 69 is a little too close for comfort!)
