i think go for the uni accommodation, even if it's not glamorous it will aid your social life so much.
Hey @study1234okay

That all depends on what you're looking to get out of the uni experience. Halls may be a bit more expensive and a smaller space than living off campus, so if saving money and your own quiet space is the priority then you might prefer to go private.

Living off campus though you may miss out on the social experience. A big part of going to uni is maybe living away from home for the first time and it can feel quite isolating. Living in halls can help you to meet people that you might not otherwise socialise with, on different courses and with different experiences. You can make some lifelong friends in your first year.

Commuting can also be a pain if you're not used to it, making sure you can get in on time for potential 9am classes. Also the distance would factor in at night time if you wanted to hang out with friends you'd need to make sure you can get home safely and check if there are night buses etc in the area if you were to go for private accommodation.

TLDR
I'd recommend living in halls for your first year to get the most out of the social side of uni. You can always go private in your second year but you can only get that first year experience once

Best wishes

Hey,

If cost is a factor for you, then private accommodation would be cheaper that student halls. Otherwise, the benefits of living in student halls have been well highlighted by the Essex Student Rep.

Or you could try looking for private accommodation within walking distance of campus to ensure you don't miss out on the social aspect of uni life.

Hello!
This is a great question and as highlighted above, it all depends on what you are looking for at your accommodation, if you are looking for cheaper, some uni owned accommodation are good prices and all bill are included, I'm not sure if this is the case for private accommodation.
As well as this, student accommodation will be closer to uni, often a walk away which for me is great as you're not having to commute in the morning by public transport but that's my own preference and its also great for social life, you'll get to meet a lot of new people through social events.

Overall, I'd weigh out the pros and cons for each, and go with what you think would suit you more!

Kind regards,
Courtney H
