In the rich areas of London, like Belgravia . I know sixth formers who get 1000 pounds per month for pocket money. Is this a bad method of parenting, because all their friends get similar allowances?

It is a stupid idea: the more money in the pocket, the more can be robbed.

Bad? not necessarily.
You don't know what they do to earn that money / their views on finances. If they help out at home, every day after college for 3/4 hours a day & on weekends, I'd say that 1k is well earned (basically a wage at that point).
However, if its just given to them, with no link between work and reward, then yes I do think it is a bad thing. Especially at this age. Parents would just be setting their children up for failure up in the future with that mindset. My dad said something to me when I was in my bratty teen years, and thought I was entitled to the latest iphone, etc: "I'm your dad, not your friend. You don't need to like me - you just need to trust what I'm doing is in your future best interest".
