The Student Room Group

does this accommodation posting look sketchy?

So I’m an international student coming to Leeds (for the first time) for studies soon and I’m looking into accommodation for the academic year. I saw this house posting on amber students but I’m not sure if it is legit or not. I also can’t seem to find any google reviews for it. Does anyone recognize this name or building? it’s called “The Terry Frost Building, Leeds”.

Here’s the link to the posting:

I’d really appreciate your thoughts and opinions, thanks!

To me it definitely seems like a non-legit posting, potentially it used to be a legit place or it's being built, it's on several of the student sites but there are 2 big red flags:

(1) lots of the pictures on the Amber Students site are for "illustration purposes" suggesting they're not actual pictures of the building, and most of them are duplicates of the same picture

(2) had a lot of trouble finding it on Google Maps. Doesn't exist at all. When I navigated to Whitelock street which Amber Students says it's right in the middle of, I turned on Street View. The satellite images have it as either a building site or just empty space (hard to tell exactly) and when you drop into Street View, the street is nothing like the images on Amber Students. It's an army barracks and a primary school, and that's all there is (street view is as of 2019 but should still be some indication if it was there). No large buildings anywhere on the street.

It could be just that google hasn't updated but usually you'd be able to find some indication that it was there, especially a large building like student accom. Personally I would stay away from it and try and book somewhere else. Either that or try and phone them up and see what they say. Prestige Students who is also offering rooms on the sites says it is the newest accommodation in Leeds, so it is possible that it has only just been built. They also have the property phone number as well.

Hope this helps :smile:

There are no reviews yet because the building is still under construction.

I came across this from 31st January this year: https://pbsanews.co.uk/2023/01/31/alumno-gmi-and-heitman-top-out-terry-frost-building-pbsa/

Note the comment in the first line: "The development is on schedule for Autumn completion."

There's always some degree of risk with new build projects like this: (1) they may not be ready on time to move into on the expected date; (2) if the building is ready by the move-in date, there may still be some work left to be done (for example, while the living accommodation is fine there might be some cosmetic work not yet completed; or some facilities (e.g. the laundry room) might not be completed); (3) there may be some snagging works not yet finished.
@rylz

It might be useful to try and find accommodation through the university as this might help you feel more reassured.

The university offers virtual tours for accommodation so that might also help you get an idea of where to stay.

All the best,
