Second nursing degree

I already have a degree in child nursing, but it was not for me, left the job and no longer hold registration. However, I have found a dual social work/learning disability nusing course that i think would be better. Can I get a second degree in this even if I hold another nursing degree

It's likely that you can, but it's also might be unnecessary? Depending on what age range you're looking to work with, you can get qualifications in LD nursing that don't require a whole other degree, but if you specifically want to be a social worker too then a second degree may be of interest to you, and you might even be presented with the option to possibly skip a year provided that you're already a qualified nurse... If anything, I'd recommend talking to some people in the LD field and asking their advice, i.e contact the course leader for a SW and LD nursing degree - they'll be able to advice you best.

Fabulous. Just asking because the Uni I applied for told me today you can’t do it if you already have a BSc in one nursing field. I told them SF advised you can providing it’s a different field. Just wanted to check ☺️

You have to remove yourself from the mnc register, to be able to do another course. But you should be able to do another. Which uni have you applied to?

I have applied to Edge Hill. I did register on the NMC for my Pin when I qualified last year, but I went on to do a MSc in Psychology which is near the end now so haven’t actually worked as a Nurse.

I would definitely ring edge hills student help desk and get some advice. But It doesn't matter that you have never worked as a nurse, you can't be registered and be a student nurse. You don't wabt to remove your pin and they still say no

Hi Laura,
As you have already completed a pre-registration nursing course, you would unfortunately not be eligible to complete another pre-registration nursing course.

A different route to the dual registration the MSci provides would be to complete the Return to Practice CPD module. This would enable you to update your NMC Registration. You would then need to work for 12 months as a children's nurse to gain eligibility to complete the 1-year PGDip Nursing (Learning Disabilities). This would allow you to become dual-registered as a children's and learning disabilities nurse.

You could then move on to the 2-year MA Social Work to gain eligibility to apply to register with SWE as a qualified social worker. However, if you have already completed a taught master's programme and used the postgraduate loan to fund your study, you would need to source alternative funding.

I hope this helps,

Hi Melissa

I am slightly confused, as I know a student from my Adult Cohort who is now doing the MSc Mental Health MSc

As Student Finance have confirmed, this is a different field so I am eligible for Student Finance funding

I have looked at the return to practice module however this states “This module will provide the necessary components (practice and theoretical learning) to enable Registered Nurses with lapsed NMC Registration to return to the professional register” I do not have a lapsed NMC registration.

I contacted NMC who advised I am eligible to complete a further BSc or MSc in another field as Student Finance fund this, I would just need to remove myself from the Nursing Register

Can you please advise

Thank You

(I also have spoken to Admission & they have forwarded my query to the LD Nursing admissions team )

Hopefully, you will get more help and support from the ld nursing admissions. As doing a pre registration course is not a barrier to doing another course. Plus I was told when I asked my tutors they said that when I qualify as ld nurse I can work as a child nurse again as its one nmc pin for both and the time on the course counts towards revalidation etc as you do clinical skills in learning disability. Might ring them myself just to clarify

Sounds Fab. I think the dual course some Uni’s do now is great as an extra year on top of the BSc to be dual trained in 2 fields is ideal.

If Edge Hill accept my application, this way will be 2 more years but for me it’s totally worth it, I will be dual trained & LD is my passion.

Plus Student finance have confirmed they will fund a BSc or MSc in a separate field so I have access to the funding ☺️

How is your course going? Are you enjoying it ?
